LA VETA — Thursday, Jan. 30, 2 p.m. treat yourself to a virtual vacation at the LaVeta Public Library. Donald Andreoli was born in Italy, raised in LaVeta and has traveled the world with camera in hand. He has been to South Africa three times and would like to share with us the local animals, large African parks, living style, culture and education system in a land filled with beauty and intrigue.

Don is a gifted photographer and story teller and it will a lively afternoon sponsored by the Friends of LaVeta Library with free refreshments!

WALSENBURG —The Board of Directors of the Huerfano County Hospital District will conduct a work session on Friday, Jan. 31, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at La Plaza Bed & Breakfast, 118 West 6th Street. This meeting is open to the public. No action will be taken.

 

Susan Gibson at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — Susan Gibson with Don Richmond & TC Smythe performs Friday, Jan. 31, 7 p.m. at the La Veta Mercantile. Susan Gibson is a Wimberley, Texas-based singer and songwriter who has released six solo albums and tours the nation. Gibson was the lead singer for the alternative country band, The Groobees, and in college wrote a little song called “Wide Open Spaces” that grew up to become (with a little help from the Dixie Chicks) one of the biggest country songs of all time. Susan Gibson will be joined on stage by long- time friends and collaborators Don Richmond (producer and member of The Rifters) and TC Smythe (Smythe & Taylor). Benefit breakfast at Eagles Hall

WALSENBURG — Eagles #1187 is hosting a community breakfast Sunday, Feb. 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 614 Main Street. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, and juice. The cost is $5 per adult and $2.50 for children. All proceeds go to the Fraternal Order of Eagles Scholarship fund.

Big Game chili cookoff at the Fox — competitors wanted!

WALSENBURG — Our chili competition fundraiser will be held Sunday, Feb. 2. Proceeds benefit our take-a-seat campaign. Setup is at 2 p.m., judging begins at 3 p.m., big game (on the big screen!) at 4:30. Awards ceremony at 6 p.m..

Enter the competition! It’s FREE! People’s Choice Awards are given for: Red Chili, Green Chili, and Dip/Side Dish. Winners receive a prize package that includes an award, gift certificates, Fox merch, and other donated items. We suggest making a “family-size” crockpot or stockpot of chili.

For those not entering the competition, a $10 donation to sample and judge the chili for The People’s Choice! awards. You receive three votes with your $10 donation. Extra votes can be purchased at the box office ($10 for five votes).

Class schedule changes at Two Peaks Fitness

LA VETA — Two Peaks Fitness announces new times for some classes this new year. Senior pilates/Fresh Start is adding a third day each week to the popular senior pilates class. The classes are now every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 11 am, at the La Veta Community Center, 131 W Ryus

indoor Walking in place has a new class every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Two Peaks Fitness, 216 S Main.

Call for entries—Members SPACe Show

LA VETA — Artists who are members of SPACe are encouraged to enter the 2020 Members’ Show in February. This show is an opportunity for artists to show works that might be new or different styles or media for the artist. Artwork in this show may also be entered in one other SPACe show during the

year. The usual $5 entry fee applies per piece, with a limit of 4 pieces per artist. ($10 for art- work more than 30” wide.) Bring artwork Thursday, Feb. 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or Saturday, Feb. 8, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The reception will be Saturday, Feb. 15, 5 – 7 p.m.

 

HCCC luncheon

WALSENBURG — The monthly Huerfano County Communication Coalition luncheon will be held today, Thursday, Feb. 6, 12 p.m. at the ambulance building meeting room, 326 Main Street. Find out what great things are happening in our community this new year and share what your group is planning for 2020. The lunch is free. Spanish Peaks Regional will be the sponsor for this month. The hospital’s transformation program participants will meet following the coalition lunch. This is a project the hospital is en- gaged in to identify and work with the community in areas to improve healthcare in Huerfano County. Anyone is welcome to attend if you are interested.

 

“The Heart of Pakistan” at La Veta Public Library

LA VETA — The La Veta Library is pleased to have our own librarian, Rachel Locke Dillon, as your program presenter Thursday, Feb. 6, 2 p.m.. Rachel will share information about her experience traveling to northern Pakistan where she taught English as a 2nd language and her continuing work with the Shining Light International organization. She will share stories and photos of this beautiful, rugged land where she was treated with hospitality and kindness, yet saddened by the lack of education and extreme poverty. You won’t want to miss this interesting program brought to you by the Friends of La Veta Library with free refreshments.

LA VETA — The next Huerfano Soup at the La Veta Mercantile, sponsored by Bachman & Associates will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, 6 pm. One dish + one vote + one passionate community = Huerfano Soup.

Huerfano Soup is a monthly community- based potluck where participants, through this micro-granting dinner, assist a variety of projects in Huerfano County. A potluck item and a $5 donation makes you eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. Free legal clinic at SP Library

WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Avenue. The next clinic will be Tuesday, Feb. 11. By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. FCPA Show Choir “Westward Ho” show

LA VETA — Calling all cowpokes, cowgals and all of their friends and family. Love is in the air—and to help you celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to offer its winter concert: “West- ward Ho”—featuring a compilation of songs celebrating those who bravely ventured outside of their comfort zones to settle the West. Two Peaks/One Book

LA VETA — The La Veta Library will once again be hosting their annual Two Peaks/One Book Community Book read, with the goal of bringing our area together through a great work of literature. This year’s theme is “ethics and civility” and the book we have chosen is the New York Time’s Best Seller, “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles. It is the beautifully written story of Count Alexander Rostov who is stripped of his title and life of luxury and sentenced to house arrest in a small attic room at the Metropol Hotel. The book is rich in history, humor, intrigue and how one man made the most of a difficult situation and entered into a world of joy and emotional discovery. We will have a book discussion and exciting programs based on the theme and novel, so stop by and get your FREE copy at the La Veta Library, start reading and be looking in the Journal for the schedule of our upcoming events!

 

La Veta Creative District logo contest

LA VETA — The La Veta Creative District is looking for a visual identity in the form of a logo design. Designs for the logo may be submitted through Friday, Feb. 28 to Kenny Schneider by email at kenetics@centurytel.net. Submissions will be judged by the LVCD staff and the winning designer’s logo will appear on printed materials, social media, and other items, such as T-shirts.

The winning logo will promote the mission of the LVCD, which is “To inspire and cultivate our diverse rural community through the development of the arts and creative industries”. Any colors may be used, however, it should also look good in black & white. For more information contact Kenny.

Hands on History at THM

TRiNiDAD — Hands on History (HOH) at Trinidad History Museum is for kids in 1 through 8 grades and runs each Friday, 1 to 4 p.m.. The cost for the class is $9 per week. (Scholarships available for free/reduced lunch, or multiple sibling enrollment)

Each Friday will include a brief history lesson to introduce the topic and its significance, followed by hands on activities. TRiNiDAD — Marty Hackett, head of the City of Trinidad Tourism Office, announced that 2021 will be the 200 anniversary of the Sante’ Fe Trail. Communities from Missouri to New Mexico will be celebrating the significance and the contribution of the trail all year, especially in September. The City of Trinidad is getting head start on planning. The first planning meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 3 at the History Museum. Food for Thought~Climate Change

TRiNiDAD — Our traditional lunch-hour Food for Thought for February has been extended to two days in a row in order to cover this topic. The presentation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Wednesday, Feb. 5, noon to 1 p.m. each day at the Pioneer Room, Sullivan Center.

The presentation will educate people on why there is human-caused climate change happening, how the climate is expected to evolve over the next years and decades, energy, and why climate change should be our number one priority.

Relief Printmaking Workshop

TRiNiDAD — TSJC is offering a five day relief printmaking workshop with Amanda Palmer beginning Monday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m.. This workshop will offer an introduction to the wonderful tools and techniques of the age-old art of block printing. Students will learn basic relief printing techniques including creating an image, cutting the image into a block and creating prints with a hand printing technique. Participants will further their understanding of reductive methods in printmaking, and in ways to plan relief images to maximize their success. Their appreciation and understanding of the value of creating artwork will be deepened, and they will come away with prints of their own, and also perhaps, of each others work. On the last day students will have the opportunity to visit Tabula Rasa Studio and print their images on a 1930s era Vandercook #2 proof printing press. Tuition for the class is $230. Amanda has taught relief printing workshops to participants at Zion National Park for two years, and she has taught printmaking to private students and small groups for decades at her studio and through artist residencies in national parks.

TRiNiDAD — Café Philosophique is a program for those who enjoy discussing philosophy. Do you like philosophizing with others about timeless questions? Join us for a monthly facilitated conversation. TRiNiDAD — Get free legal help Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 3 to 4 pm at the Carnegie library. Participants must sign up in advance to talk with an attorney about civil matters (no criminal cases, please) via video chat. NM Journalism 2020 Scholarship

NEW MEXicO — The 2020 Doris Gregory Memorial Journalism Scholarships are now accepting applications through Friday, Jan. 31. The New Mexico Press Women annually award two of these journalism scholarships. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, while the first-runner-up will receive $500. The 2020 award will also honor the memory of long-time member Deb Farson, who passed away earlier this year.

Recipients must be continuing students in pursuit of a graduate or undergraduate degree or minor in print journalism, broadcast, photojournalism, public relations, communications or advertising at a New Mexico college or university the following fall 2020 semester.

Raton Museum membership drive

RATON — The next Senior Center food distribution will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 10 am – 3 pm at Colfax County Senior Center, 444 S 1st Street. Senior Boxes are distributed each month the Wednesday after the first Tuesday.

24th Annual Father-Daughter “Roaring Into The 20’s” Dance

RATON — St. Patricks-St. Joseph’s Parish, along with FNB New Mexico, and D&T Wells & Auto, present the 24th Annual Father-Daughter “Roaring Into The 20’s” dance to be held Friday, Feb. 7, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Parish Hall with DJ Josh Martinez. Tickets per person are $8. Snacks will be provided. Corsages and photos will be for sale at the dance. Please note: There are a limited number of tickets, so buy your tickets early at the Parish Office, FNB New Mexico, or Roses Honeysuckle Station.

No moms or boys are allowed. This is a great opportunity for fathers, and father figures alike, to show their daughters how to be treated on a special date with dad. Proceeds from the dance will benefit our youth group attending the Steubenville of the Rockies Youth Conference in Denver this summer.

 

Colfax County Young Marines Spaghetti Buffet Fundraiser

RATON — Colfax County Young Marines and Colfax County Rapid Response invite you to a spaghetti buffet dinner Saturday, Feb. 8, 5 p.m. at the Sweet Shoppe. This fundraiser assists the Colfax County Young Marines with funds for their needs while they serve our community. It’s an all you can eat buffet with service from the young marines. Adults tickets are $10, students are $5.

Colfax Rapid Response meeting

RATON — Colfax County Rapid Response meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, 7 p.m. at the Colfax County Courthouse, 230 North 3rd Street. The next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13. Colfax County Rapid Response is a volunteer firefighting community based organization. Currently we engage in wildland and structural fires. When called upon we serve a civic duty, which is to protect the communities and citizens in Colfax County.

We are constantly looking for new volunteers, so if you are interested, please come to one of our meetings.
