Susan Gibson is a Wimberley, Texas-based singer and songwriter who has released six solo albums and tours the nation. Gibson was the lead singer for the alternative country band, The Groobees, and in college wrote a little song called “Wide Open Spaces” that grew up to become (with a little help from the Dixie Chicks) one of the biggest country songs of all time. Two Peaks/One Book
LA VETA — The La Veta Library will once again be hosting their annual Two Peaks/One Book Community Book read, with the goal of bringing our area together through a great work of literature. This year’s theme is “ethics and civility” and the book we have chosen is the New York Time’s Best Seller, “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles. It is the beautifully written story of Count Alexander Rostov who is stripped of his title and life of luxury and sentenced to house arrest in a small attic room at the Metropol Hotel. The book is rich in history, humor, intrigue and how one man made the most of a difficult situation and entered into a world of joy and emotional discovery. La Veta Creative District logo contest
LA VETA — The La Veta Creative District is looking for a visual identity in the form of a logo design. Designs for the logo may be submitted through Friday, Feb. 28 to Kenny Schneider by email at kenetics@centurytel.net. Submissions will be judged by the LVCD staff and the winning designer’s logo will appear on printed materials, social media, and other items, such as T-shirts.
The winning logo will promote the mission of the LVCD, which is “To inspire and cultivate our diverse rural community through the development of the arts and creative industries”. Any colors may be used, however, it should also look good in black & white. For more information contact Kenny.

Food for Thought~Climate Change
TRiNiDAD — Our traditional lunch-hour Food for Thought for February has been extended to two days in a row in order to cover this topic. The presentation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Wednesday, Feb. 5, noon to 1 p.m. each day at the Pioneer Room, Sullivan Center.
The presentation will educate people on why there is human-caused climate change happening, how the climate is expected to evolve over the next years and decades, energy, and why climate change should be our number one priority.

Relief Printmaking Workshop
TRiNiDAD — TSJC is offering a five day relief printmaking workshop with Amanda Palmer beginning Monday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m.. This workshop will offer an introduction to the wonderful tools and techniques of the age-old art of block printing. Students will learn basic relief printing techniques including creating an image, cutting the image into a block and creating prints with a hand printing technique. Participants will further their understanding of reductive methods in printmaking, and in ways to plan relief images to maximize their success. Their appreciation and understanding of the value of creating artwork will be deepened, and they will come away with prints of their own, and also perhaps, of each others work. On the last day students will have the opportunity to visit Tabula Rasa Studio and print their images on a 1930s era Vandercook #2 proof printing press. Tuition for the class is $230. NM Journalism 2020 Scholarship
NEW MEXicO — The 2020 Doris Gregory Memorial Journalism Scholarships are now accepting applications through Friday, Jan. 31. The New Mexico Press Women annually award two of these journalism scholarships. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, while the first-runner-up will receive $500. The 2020 award will also honor the memory of long-time member Deb Farson, who passed away earlier this year.
Recipients must be continuing students in pursuit of a graduate or undergraduate degree or minor in print journalism, broadcast, photojournalism, public relations, communications or advertising at a New Mexico college or university the following fall 2020 semester.

24th Annual Father-Daughter “Roaring Into The 20’s” Dance
RATON — St. Patricks-St. Joseph’s Parish, along with FNB New Mexico, and D&T Wells & Auto, present the 24th Annual Father-Daughter “Roaring Into The 20’s” dance to be held Friday, Feb. 7, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Parish Hall with DJ Josh Martinez. Tickets per person are $8. Snacks will be provided. Corsages and photos will be for sale at the dance. Please note: There are a limited number of tickets, so buy your tickets early at the Parish Office, FNB New Mexico, or Roses Honeysuckle Station.
No moms or boys are allowed. This is a great opportunity for fathers, and father figures alike, to show their daughters how to be treated on a special date with dad. Proceeds from the dance will benefit our youth group attending the Steubenville of the Rockies Youth Conference in Denver this summer.
Colfax County Young Marines Spaghetti Buffet Fundraiser
RATON — Colfax County Young Marines and Colfax County Rapid Response invite you to a spaghetti buffet dinner Saturday, Feb. 8, 5 p.m. at the Sweet Shoppe. This fundraiser assists the Colfax County Young Marines with funds for their needs while they serve our community. It’s an all you can eat buffet with service from the young marines. Colfax Rapid Response meeting
RATON — Colfax County Rapid Response meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, 7 p.m. at the Colfax County Courthouse, 230 North 3rd Street. The next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13. Colfax County Rapid Response is a volunteer firefighting community based organization. Currently we engage in wildland and structural fires. When called upon we serve a civic duty, which is to protect the communities and citizens in Colfax County.
We are constantly looking for new volunteers, so if you are interested, please come to one of our meetings.
