First Day Hike at Lathrop
WALSENBURG — Start out the New Year in a healthy way by participating in the 2020 First Day Hike at Lathrop State Park Wednesday, January, 1. Participants will meet at the Visitor Center at 10 am, then hike the Hogback Trail (2.3 mile-natural surface), or the Cuerno Verde Trail (2.9 miles-paved). Refreshments will be served at the Visitor Center after the hike.

The Martin Gilmore Trio (MG3) is a bluegrass and folk music group from Denver comprised of Martin Gilmore, Nick Amodeo, and Ian Haegele, their sound centers around acoustic bluegrass and folk music, but they stray into jazz, swing, country, and blues. Operation “Santa Paws”
TRINIDAD — Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association announced a collaboration with Santa “Paws” in hopes of help- ing shelter animals have a wonderful holiday season and the best of care for the years to come.
Operation Santa Paws is a kind-hearted, cheery, animal-loving supply and donation drive… a unique holiday give- back effort that will help Noah’s Ark in continuing to assist the 1,600 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies we help each year.”

Giving Trees-Like shopping? Like giving? Shop for a cause and give from the heart to pets who have less. The NAAWA Giving Trees are decorated with ornaments listing much needed supplies for shelter pets. Simply visit a giving tree, pick an ornament, purchase the listed item, and place into the box near the tree. Giving Trees can be found at Big R, The Tail’s End Grooming Salon, and the Noah’s Ark Thrift Store.
You CAN Make a Difference Food Drive-Now thru Dec 31- Noah’s Ark’s shelter and their thrift store are collecting canned dog and cat food for shelter critters. Donations of pet food can be delivered to the thrift store or shelter.
Fill Santa’s Boot-This holiday season, you can help Noah’s Ark reach a goal of $50,000 to purchase new indoor dog kennels for the new animal shelter. Just look for official Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association representatives any day at the Noah’s Ark Thrift Store and fill Santa’s boot for homeless pets in need. Sugarite lakes closed due to bad ice
RATON — New Mexico State Parks officials have closed both Lake Maloya and Lake Alice at Sugarite Canyon State Park because of bad ice as of Dec. 20. “We want to keep everyone safe, including park staff who might have to take part in any rescue or recovery,” said Park Superintendent Robert McIvor.
Both lakes are popular fishing destinations for rainbow trout, including some trophy-sized trout at Lake Maloya. “When we determine that the ice is thick enough to allow activities, we will announce that,” McIvor added
Sugarite Canyon State Park encompasses 4,000 acres located six miles northeast of Raton via State Highways 526 and 72. The park includes 20 miles of hiking trails, two campgrounds, and the remains of a historic coal mining camp. For more information, call the park at 575-445-5607.

NA meetings in Raton
RATON — NA meetings are held every Monday from 7 pm to 8 pm at Mesa Church, 140 North 1st Street. Here’s what you can expect at your Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Opening discussion usually starts with a prayer and an introduction. During introduction, members will state their names and if comfortable, may also state a little something about themselves such as their addiction or the number of days they have in sobriety. Try to get to the meeting early so that you can meet with some of the members of the group early on. You might even find a sponsor during this time.
Make the most out of the meeting by asking as many questions as you have and being open and honest. If you can spend additional time to talk and mingle with other members of the group after the meeting, that will be good too. If you are an addict who is in recovery, you can attend closed sessions but if you are not an addict and simply want to take some time to experience a meeting, attending an open meeting is the best option.
For the best results and the greatest support, NA recommends that new members at- tend one meeting every day for the first 90 days—90 meetings in 90 days. Most meetings will have a single speaker and moderator and will focus on one of the twelve-steps of recovery, some include excerpts from the Bible too. Attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings regularly can help you to build bonds with other members of the group and you may progress through the twelve-steps with a better understanding of each. The end goal is to be in recovery and to become a sponsor who can help others who are in their early stages of the NA program.
