Host an Exchange Student!
OUR WORLD — ASSE International Student Exchange Pro- grams, a highly respected, non-profit, public-benefit organization, is seeking local host families for high school boys and girls from France, Germany, Italy, Thailand, China, and the former Soviet Republics. Students are anxiously awaiting word on who their host families will be for the 2019/20 academic school year. Host families provide room, board, and guidance for a teenager(s) living thousands of miles from home. Couples, single parents, and families with or without children in the home are all encouraged to apply.
The exchange students arrive from their home country to begin the 2019/20 school year. Each ASSE student is fully in- sured, brings his/her own personal spending money and expects to bear his/her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and life- styles. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.
ASSE students are enthusiastic and are excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also share their own culture and language with their host families. Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving everyone involved a rich cultural experience.

Shawn Brown at La Veta Mercantile
LA VETA — Shawn Brown, master of the Hammond B3 and Most Soulful Vocalist this side of the Mississippi will perform Thursday, August 29, 7 pm at La Veta Mercantile. Brown learned music while playing Gospel with his family. His musical journey began at the age of 3 when he began playing the piano and then became the organist, accompanying his mother for their church at 8 years old. Shawn’s latest album, Best Blues Money Can Buy, is a mix of Gospel, jazz, and blues. He has shared the stage with Al Green, Clarence Clemons, Christopher Cross, Earth Wind & Fire, Keith Sweat, Ronnie Earl, Lucky Peterson, and Percy Sledge. Labor Day Weekend Activities at Lathrop State Park
WALSENBURG — Friday, August 30, Musicians from the Chavez/Huerta Preparatory Academy in Pueblo, return to La- throp to perform mariachi music. This presentation will begin at 6:45 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
Saturday morning, August 31, join the park naturalist in an activity called Puzzle Hike. This fun-for-the-family pro- gram involves finding word puzzles along a short segment of trail and solving them to find the theme of the activity. The activity will begin at 9 am at the Piñon Campground Amphi- theater.
Saturday evening, Lathrop hosts an evening of art and poetry. Storyteller and Poet, Annette Meserve presents ‘by the seat of our pants’, a program of stories and poetry interpreting the artworks of Gordon Lucero. The program will begin at 6:45 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
Sunday morning, September 1, join GOCO Interpreter Tom Macedo for a naturalist hike. Learn about the flora, fauna and geology of Lathrop State Park. The hike will begin at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater at 8:30 am.
Sunday evening, Colorado’s oldest folkloric dance group, El Fandango, will perform traditional dances. This presentation will begin at 6:45 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphi- theater.
In the event of rain, the evening presentations will be moved to the Visitor Center.
As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week.
Lathrop State Park calendar photo contest entries needed by 8/31
WALSENBURG — It’s your last chance to submit photos of Lathrop State Park for a 2020 calendar. A panel made up of park staff will choose approximately 24 images which will include a cover photo, one photo for each month, and smaller inset images. The theme for the 2020 calendar will be The Flora and Fauna of Lathrop State Park. So, of course, we will be looking primarily for images of plants and animals, but we will also accept landscape photographs which feature animals or particular plants & plant communities (i.e. piñon/juniper woodland).
The contest is open to the general public to both amateur and professional photographers. All photos must be original and taken by the submitting entrant. All photos must have been taken at Lathrop State Park.
Entries need to be in a digital format.

LA VETA — Jill Jones will perform Saturday, August 31, 7 pm at La Veta Mercantile. Jones, lead vocals and rhythm guitar, was founder and lead singer of The Hays County Gals and The Lone Star Chorale, recipient of the 2002 Academy of Western Artists Cowboy Group of the Year Award. A veteran of cowboy gatherings across the country, she has appeared with Willie Nelson on TNN’s “Legends of Country Music” and Ian Tyson at the Elko National Cowboy Gathering. Bob Goldstein is known as one of the best sidemen in the Southwest, Bob was nominated for instrumentalist of the year by the Western Music Association, and for Guitar Player of the Year by the Colorado Bluegrass Music Association.
50 Shades of Brown, with a Little Blue
LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta invites everyone to the opening reception Saturday, Aug. 31, 5 – 7 pm for Nan McDowell’s exhibit of her intimate and expressive oil paintings that comprise her show “50 Shades of Brown…with a Little Blue”. Also opening this week is the “Artists Choice” exhibit which includes original art by 16 area artists. The variety of media includes oils, watercolors, acrylics, photography, pastel, encaustic and repurposed materials. The shows will be on display until Sept. 21.

Hands on History at Trinidad Lake State Park
TRINIDAD — Native American Hands On History: Home Near the Heart of the World presentation will be held Saturday, August 31, 5 to 8 pm at Trinidad Lake State Park Amphi- theater. Presented by Pamela Good Wind, In- digenous Roots, LLC. Pamela Good Wind is the Director of Education for Indigenous Roots. The mission of Indigenous Roots is to present, preserve, and perpetuate the history and cultural heritage of Native Americans in a way that promotes accuracy, sensitivity, and respect.
During this special evening program, you will learn the history behind an on site Tipi ring artifact, use replicas of artifacts to grind corn, enjoy tasty, traditional Blue Corn muffins, listen to a traditional story, try your hand with indigenous hunting tools, by throwing a spear, using an atlatl, & throwing a rabbit stick.

Tyrone Flats Adventure Ride
TRINIDAD — This ride, Saturday, September 7, 7 am to 5 pm is part of the Explore Las Animas Dirt Series. Adventure rides are not races. They’re about having fun hanging with like minded people who want to explore and ride hard. Rides are timed, but not for competitive purposes. Again, all roads are open and you must obey traffic laws.
The day begins at 7 am for Registration / sign in; 8:30 am warm up and a 9 am start, then finishes at Elm Street Train Depot (apx 3pm), followed by dinner (apx 4 pm).
This ride was scheduled for the fall for a reason. It’s one that exposes riders to elements of a high plains desert. Imagine what it was like to make the Santa Fe Trail journey on horse years ago? The ride exposes us to limited shade, dusty roads, cattle and cactus. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of eagles, hawks, and ravens within a matter of minutes of one another. Segments of ride go past the ghost towns of Tyrone and Model. The latter of which was the site of horrific B24 bomber training accident and has a noteworthy origin story. It was a community originally a planned to be a “model” community, hence the name. Today it’s abandoned builDings, along with the canyons and plains of Purgatoire Valley once inhabited by the Apache, make for some fantastic visuals on this ride. $75 registration. TRINIDAD — Saturday, September 7, the much-anticipated “Downton Tabby” will take place from 2 to 5 pm at the beautiful Bloom Mansion Gardens at The Trinidad History Museum. In true “Downton” fashion, this high tea event promises a delightful afternoon of food, games, and conversation. The Bean Day Rodeo is the biggest open rodeo in New Mexico Bean Day is the final rodeo stop in the “Whatever It Takes” Rodeo Series put on by TA Rodeo.

7th Annual Wagon Mound Bean Day Car & Truck Show is August 31, 11:30 am – 3:00 pm. People come from all over New Mexico, Texas & Colorado to show their cars at our annual Car & Truck Show. Enjoy music and food vendors while you admire the cars. We are currently looking for vendors.
Wagon Mound Bean Day Mud Bog Race – Qualifying Event Sunday, September 1. Come out to our 10th Annual Mud Bogs hosted by Phillips Mud Racing at the Rodeo Arena in Wagon Mound, NM. This race is a Qualifying Race for the MSWPM Midwest Showdown in TX!!
Gates open at 8 am, Race begins at 11 am gate admission $10-Adults $5- Kids concession is available. After the race enjoy music by Tylor Brandon at the Wagon Mound gym.
The Bean Day Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 2. The parade theme is “Flash Back to the 80s” Contact parade organizer- Abran 575-643-6402 for information or to enter. Trophies awarded to 1st & 2nd place entries.
Our Amateur Horseshoe Pitching Tournament, Sunday, September 1, 10 am to 2 pm, is open to all ages. $20 will buy you and a friend an entry fee in the tournament. Gate City Music Festival

Cleveland Millfest
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Millfest Labor Day weekend runs Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1, 10 am to 3 pm. Over 60 artists and craftspeople are participating.
