Apply for Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Scholarships  

OUR WORLD— The Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association is offering two scholarships for students interested in careers in agriculture.
The Fiebig-Lee Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled at Colorado State University, majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field, health and human sciences, or a pre-vet undergraduate. https://tinyurl.com/h2dcz7x7
The Grace & Oley Kohlman Scholarship (named for CCA past-president, Oley Kohlman, and his wife Grace who were instrumental in the development of JCCA and the scholarship program) is open to all current JCCA members. Preference will be given to students majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field in the state of Colorado. This scholarship has made a difference for many agricultural youth who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to receive a college education.   https://tinyurl.com/yc3ubk6r

LA VETA— Tired of always following the rules? Need a break from the conventional? Here’s your chance to show artwork that challenges and/or delights the viewer with the unexpected. Bring up to 4 pieces to SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, La Veta, Thursday – Saturday, May 4, 5, & 6, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. There is a small fee of $5 per piece (artwork wider than 30″ is considered 2 entries). Art will remain until June 10. WALSENBURG— Join the Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg every Friday from 10:30-11:30 a.m.  Join our Children’s Librarian, Mrs Flamingo as she reads a story and participate in a craft related to the story!  Don’t miss this fun and creative program to share with your kids! Weekend movie at the Fox: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

WALSENBURG– The historic Fox Theatre’s weekend movie is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, PG-13 • 2 hours 30 minutes. Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must rally his team to defend the universe and protect one of their own. If the mission is not completely successful, it could possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them. Showtimes: Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday 7:30 p.m., Sunday 3 p.m. Adults $7, students $6, children (5-12) & seniors $5.

Beginning T’ai Chi Classes at LVSA

Eagles Ladies Auxiliary breakfast

LA VETA— The Walsenburg Eagles Ladies Auxiliary 1187 will host a community brunch celebrating Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, May 7, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Eagles Hall 614 Main St in Walsenburg.  We will be serving something different this month, a breakfast burrito smothered in green chili with fixings to put on top including lettuce, tomato, cheese, and jalapeños.  Hashbrowns on the side. Coffee or juice included.  The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for adults for children.  We hope to see you there.  We continue to strive to support our community with the proceeds from the brunches.

Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. Cost is $5.00 per person and class size is limited to 10. One must pre register by emailing Bob at: bobkennemer@gmail.com

American Legion Post 16 Meeting
 
WALSENBURG— The newly renamed Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of The American Legion will have their monthly meeting Wednesday, May 10, 6 p.m. at the Walsenburg Housing Authority Office, 220 Russell Ave. in Walsenburg. This meeting will be concentrating on Post Elections. If you want or are thinking about running for a Post Office, this is the meeting. Final nominations will be held with Elections shortly thereafter. The Veterans Trust Fund (Veterans helping Veterans) is underway and you can find out more about this program at the meeting. Movie Matinee: Where the Crawdads Sing

LA VETA— Join us at La Veta Public Library, 310 S. Main St., as we show the film based on the global best-selling phenomenon “Where the Crawdads Sing” on Thursday, May 11, 2 p.m. Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh. Free with refreshments.

Free Wrestling Camp from a pro

WALSENBURG— Jonathon Andreatta, a John Mall High School graduate, who went on to be a two time All-American and National Champion, and now coaches wrestling in West Virginia, will be holding a free wrestling camp on Friday, May 12 for anyone.  Beginner session will be held  from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and an advanced sessions will run from 12 to 2 p.m., and another from 3 to 5 p.m. The event will be held at John Mall High School in Walsenburg.  Contact Josh Vialpando at 719-250-9251 to reserve a spot.

LV Village Annual Bake Sale

LA VETA— The La Veta Village is hosting a Mother’s Day BAKE SALE on Friday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the La Veta Library, 310 South Main Street.  Cookies, pies, cakes, and other goodies will be available for a small donation.  The Auxiliary continues to sponsor events to assist in delivering services to its residents.  So, mark your calendars, and, COME JOIN US on May 12! And, get a special treat for “Mom.”

Wisdom Archives: Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

WALSENBURG—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado. Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha Embroidery on Friday, May 12 from 1-3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Come learn as well as get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form. SPLD Presents Flicks at the Library

WALSENBURG— Join us on Friday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. at Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.  Bring the kids to watch Moana, a story of an adventurous teenager on a mission to save her people.  Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers her own identity.  Free popcorn, just bring your own beverage!

USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive  

HUERFANO — Continuing a tradition that first began in 1993, the 31st annual letter carriers’ stamp out Hunger Food Drive will be Saturday, May 13.
“Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day,” said Jeff Frey, Colorado Food Drive Coordinator.
You can contribute to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by putting non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox.  The Walsenburg Post Office will gather all donations and donate them to Dorcas Circle Food & Clothing Pantry, located at  911 S. Main in Walsenburg.

Las Animas County Rec Study Public Open House

Trinidad Water Festival

TRINIDAD— Every May, children from all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. An opening ceremony kicks things off at 8:30 a.m. with presentations running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in the festival, either as a school or presenter, please contact us at tomandlindaperry@gmail.com.

Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

Armed Forces Day Parade

TRINIDAD— The Las Animas County Veteran’s Memorial Committee is proud to present the 2023 Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. Featuring the Ft. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.  To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the Foundation Board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.
