Change of Venue for Grief Circle and Death Cafe

OUR WORLD  — Two of the important projects of Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice are changing location and time.
The Grief Circle, a support group for those dealing with grief and bereavement, will now be held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 2:00p.m. in the conference room at the First National Bank, 100 E. Main Street in Trinidad. The popular Death Café that offers the opportunity to discuss different aspects and philosophies around death and dying will now be on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 2:00p.m. again in the conference room at the First National Bank of Trinidad. The sessions will be either in person with appropriate Covid precautions or by Zoom. These free programs will be ongoing.
Anyone in the area is welcome to attend. The conference room is on the second floor and an elevator is

Scholarship drawing for vaccinated students

OUR WORLD  —  The Colorado Community College System (CCCS), in partnership with Amazon, has announced the “Shot at a Scholarship” program. The Foundation for Colorado Community Colleges will award two full-tuition scholarships of $5,000 along with five $1,000 scholarships at each of the System’s 13 colleges to students who are enrolled and attest to being fully vaccinated by mid-September. In total, CCCS and Amazon will award 67 scholarships to community college students.  This includes Trinidad State.
Scholarships will be awarded via a drawing and recipients will be recognized as Amazon Scholars. Students may register for the drawing anytime between July 21, 2021 and September 15, 2021, at cccs.edu/shot-at-a-scholarship/.  All students who register by the deadline and are enrolled as of September 15th will be entered in the drawing and will be notified by September 20th if they receive a scholarship.

Car Wash Fundraiser for Relay for Life

OUR WORLD  —  On Saturday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., there will be a car wash fundraiser for ROaR for Relay for Life outside Corradino Auto Body at 124 N. Maple St. in Trinidad. The cost is $10 per car.
While you’re there, fill your tummies with delicious bake sale treats and burritos, and have fun in our photo booth! Support our mission in the fight against cancer!

Philosophy Cafe: Who is the Artist?

OUR WORLD  —  On Monday, August 9th at 5:00p.m., there will be another rousing conversation taking place in the digital Philosophy Cafe, hosted on Zoom  by the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library.
This week, the conversation will flow from the following questions: Who is the artist? Who is the maker of a work of art? What defines the maker from other participants, and from the audience?

Stonewall Century Ride

OUR WORLD  —  Register for the 18th Annual Stonewall Century Ride, Saturday, August 14. The Stonewall Century is a challenging 102-mile out-and-back road bike ride along Highway 12, the scenic Highway of Legends, from La Veta to Segundo and back. Turn around wherever you like. San Isabel Electric to hold annual meeting virtually

OUR WORLD  —  On San Isabel Electric, for a second year in a row, will be foregoing an in-person annual meeting, conducting the meeting virtually online.
Registration for the 2021 virtual annual meeting will open September 13 at 8 a.m. and close September 18 at noon.  Phone registration will only be available during business hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. September 13 – 17, and on Saturday, September 18 between 10 a.m. and noon.
After registering, members will receive an email with instructions about how to join the meeting. You must pre-register to participate in the live virtual annual meeting.
Members who pre-register will receive a $20 bill credit as a registration gift that will appear on the bill they receive in November.
At the annual meeting, two big announcements will be made about a $25,000 home energy-efficiency project donation and about future rate stability.
The co-op will also inform the membership about programs available to help lower electric bills.
Members are asked to submit questions through the chat feature during the annual meeting. Answers to questions and a recording of the meeting will be available on SIEA.com following the annual meeting.

Fox Walsenburg weekend movies

WALSENBURG – This weekend the Fox Theater will be showing two special features. Due to last weekend’s crazy rains,  the free outdoor showing of Scream was rescheduled to this Saturday, August 7th.    The show will start around 8:30 or 9:00p.m. and  can be enjoyed on the lawn or in your car.
On Friday and Sunday, the film at the Fox will be The Green Knight – a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from Arthurian Legend. The film will play at 7:30p.m. on Friday and 3:00p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for students, and $5 for children aged 5-12. Both films this weekend are rated R.

Youth Sports League Soccer Sign-ups

HUERFANO COUNTY —  For Ages 4-12. Register August 2-August 30 at Two Peaks Fitness, 216 S Main St in La Veta, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday-Saturday.
Practice begins the week of September 13, with games starting the week of September 27.
Evening registration also available August 17 & 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Two Peaks Fitness in La Veta and SCCY in Walsenburg.
Cost $35-$40 based on age; discounts available for families registering more than one child. Scholarships available.

School supply drive at Lathrop Park

HUERFANO COUNTY — Lathrop State Park is sponsoring a “Back to School Supply Drive” from July 19 to Aug. 15. You can donate notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, color pencils, backpacks, dry erase markers, folders, clorox wipes, boxes of tissues, etcetera.
There are three drop off locations:
Lathrop State Park at 70 County Road 502 in Walsenburg.
SPRHC / Hospital at 23500 US 160 in Walsenburg.
JM Tire at 928 Main Street in Walsenburg.

Fun Fridays Field Trips

HUERFANO COUNTY — Field Trips for kids on Fridays. All kids are welcome to join; maximum of 15 kids/activity.
Cost: $10 for children of gym members, $15 for non-members.
Registration must be completed the Wednesday prior to each activity for logistics planning.
Drop-offs at Two Peaks Fitness at 8:45 a.m. the morning of each activity.

Lathrop State Park Events

HUERFANO COUNTY — This weekend at Lathrop state park, the theme will be keeping traditions alive with a bit of Cowboy Poetry by Peggy Godfrey on Friday, August 6th at 7:30p.m. at the Amphitheater. On Saturday, Terry Lakes will speak about the history of the Harmonica – the instrument of the traveler and solitary mountain folks of old!

Story Time at the Spanish Peaks Library

WALSENBURG – This Friday from 10:30 am – 11:30 am Ms. Sherry will be doing a story time about owls.  We will become scientists and learn where owls live, what they eat, and what sounds they make.  Believe it or not, it is not just whoooo!  We will also use our science skills as we dissect owl pellets to really see what they eat.  Please come join us.  You can contact Ms. Sherry at sherry@spld.org or 738-2774 with any questions.

Apes, Anthropology at La Veta Library

LA VETA — The La Veta Library will proudly host Sam Struters on August 5th at 1 p.m. (please note the new time) in the upstairs meeting room. Sam has a Ph.D in anthropology,has worked in occupational therapy and has a decade of experience working with apes in captivity at a Primate Research Center where she was the Director of Behavioral Sciences.
Her highly acclaimed book, Chimpanzee Voices: A Stranger in a Culture of Chimpanzees, from which she will read excerpts, is a memoir, analysis and critique of our dealings with others-human or not. She will relay the stories of individual chimpanzees who were used in research and examine the ethics of animal research from a very personal level. She will also discuss how this research enabled us to find a vaccine for COVID so rapidly.    This guaranteed to be an interesting, thought provoking program that you will not want to miss.  For more info call LVPL 719-742-5278.

Grand opening of new Huerfano Judicial Center

WALSENBURG  — The grand opening of the new Huerfano County Judicial Center will take place on Friday, Aug. 6th at 1:30p.m. Refreshments will be served immediately after the ceremony.

Rupert Wates performance at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — On Friday, August 6th at 7:00p.m., Rupert Wates will be performing at the La Veta Mercantile.Rupert Wates’ music is an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville and cabaret. Despite Wates’ British background, and underpinning the universality of his music’s appeal, Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange has called him “a prime figure in American music.”
Tickets are $15 if you purchase them in advance and $18 day of show.

The Rifters Concert

LA VETA — On Saturday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m., the Rifters will perform at Jim and Peggy Hoobler’s Open Air Lawn Concert Venue at 707 East Virginia Street in La Veta. Tickets are $20 at the door, and there are no reservations required. Bring a lawn chair, refreshments, and friends for a great evening of entertainment.

Gardner Fire Station open house & BBQ

UPPER HUERFANO — On Saturday, Aug. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Upper Huerfano Fire Protection District in connection with the Spanish Peaks Alliance for Wildfire Protection will hold an open house and BBQ at the Gardner Fire Protection District. This is an open invitation to all residents of the Upper Huerfano Fire Protection District!

Dog Days of Cuchara

CUCHARA — The Dog Days of Cuchara event will take place on August 7th from 11 a.m to 3 p.m followed by a Corn Hole Tournament at the Dog Bar & Grill.
Join us for an all day doggy street party on Main Street in Cuchara! Enjoy big dog and little dog races, an obstacle course, scavenger hunts, yard games, vendor booths, music and more. New additions this year include: a bake sale fundraiser for Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association, dunk tank benefiting the La Veta Fire Auxiliary, dog adoptions through From Forgotten to Forever, and doggy vaccines available through Dr. Hecht on site! Don’t forget the Corn Hole Tournament at the Dog Bar and Grill after the street party. See you for a dog-gone good time!

JMHS Volleyball 4 on 4 Tournament

WALSENBURG – On Saturday, August 7th, there will be a 4 on 4 volleyball tournament taking place at John Mall High School. There is a women’s division and a co-ed division with a maximum number of 5 per team. The cost of entry is $100 per team and all proceeds will benefit the JMHS Volleyball team. LA VETA — On Saturday, August 7th from 5:00pm – 7:00p.m., there will be a reception held at the Spanish Peaks Arts Council Gallery for the 2021 Photography Show. There will be sixty selected photos created by photographers from throughout the U.S. Refreshments will be provided and there is no admission fee.

Free Legal Help Clinic

HUERFANO COUNTY — Despite the COVID-19 closures of libraries across Colorado, the Virtual Pro Se Clinic (VPC) clinics will still be held as scheduled.  As a work-around, instead of clinic patrons coming in-person to your local public library (which may have limited access), the volunteer attorney will call each clinic patron’s telephone directly, during the clinic hours, using the phone number provided.
The event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. To be added to the sign-up sheet, please contact your Spanish Peaks Library at  (719) 738-2774 to be added to the sign-up sheet.   Space is limited.

Ag Appreciation Supper

HUERFANO COUNTY — Huerfano County Farm Bureau would like to again invite the agricultural community to the Ag Appreciation supper.   It will be held in the 4-H barn at the La Veta fairgrounds on August 13 from 4 to 6 p.m.  During the meal KSPK will have live programing and The Apache Fiddlers will be performing. The gymkhana takes place immediately afterward so come for an evening of food & fun.  The meal is free but donations to the Farm Bureau Scholarship Fund will be appreciated.

Huerfano County 4H Fair and Open Class Show

LA VETA — The county fair will  start on August 11 and run through August 15.  The 4-H and FFA members will have general exhibits on display and will show their market animal projects throughout the week.  There will be all kinds of goods in the open class show – everything from ceramics to wood workings.
The fair ends on August 15th with the Buyers dinner starting at 11:30am, followed by the Junior Livestock Auction at 2:00pm.  Look for a full schedule of events in the paper this week.  Hope to see you all there!

LA VETA — Open Class entries wanted for the 84th Annual 4-H Fair and Open Class Show Show, August 11th-15th. Check in time for Open Class entries is 8:00a.m. – 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, at the 4-H barn in La Veta.
Open Class projects categories include:
Ceramics, Wood Working, Leather Craft, Baked Goods, Knitting Items, Photography, Gardening, Sewing, Canning, Paintings, Quilting, Flower Arrangements, Handmade Jewelry, Craft Items, Crochet Items, etc.. If you can make it, we can display it!

Sean Harrison performance at Deerprint Wine Bistro

Collaboration, Tangents, Confluence – 30 Years of Art

WALSENBURG – The Museum of Friends is honored to present artists Joe Slusky and Katie Hawkinson who have worked together in collaboration since 1991. For this project, MoF recreates in the main gallery a 25 x 8-foot California book store construction facade on which both artists created the painting on exhibit. This major work will be embellished by other projects both joint and singular in which each artist is showcased. Opening Friday, August 13th, all are invited, please come meet the artists who will be present to answer any questions. HUERFANO COUNTY — AA in Walsenburg meets Tuesday and Friday, at 7 p.m. at the Church of Christ, across the street from the Spanish Peaks Library.
In  La Veta, AA will meet on Mondays at 6 p.m. in La Veta at the Methodist Church on Main St.
NA meets Saturday at noon at the Huerfano Community Center.

Vendors wanted for ArtoCade 2021

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — Calling all former and possible new vendors! ArtoCade 2021 is happening this year on Saturday, September 11th and it will be a great opportunity to sell your goods or get the word about something important you care about.
Setup is at 8:00a.m., the parade is at noon, and teardown will take place at 4:00 or 5:00p.m., depending on the crowds, so there will be ample opportunity for folks to see your booth.

Community Health Needs Assessment

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — Mt. San Rafael is working to complete their Community Health Needs Assessment; an important tool, completed every three years, that identifies key health needs and issues through systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis.
A Community Health Needs Assessment gives organizations, like Mt. San Rafael Hospital, comprehensive information about the community’s current health status, needs, and issues. This information helps develop a community health improvement plan by justifying how and where resources should be allocated to best meet community needs.
To assist with this process is a community survey.  The survey asks about health, current health practices, and impressions of the overall health of the Trinidad community.  The survey is available in both English and Spanish and in paper form or electronic. Trinidad First Friday Art Walk

TRINIDAD  — On Friday, August 6, from 5:00-8:00p.m., Trinidad will once again feature a First Friday Art Walk. In addition to the 9 galleries filled with art to browse, there will be live music, trolley rides, circus acts, and refreshments. Ten businesses will be open after hours.

Memorial for  Veterans of the Korean War

AGUILAR — The American Legion John T. Cook Post 42 in Aguilar will be honoring all Military Veterans from Aguilar and the surrounding area, who served from the Korean War to recent conflicts with a plaque at the Aguilar Community Center.  The memorial honoring those who served in WWI and WWII is also available to be viewed on Saturday August 7th during the Aguilar Days celebrations.
The Post will also be sponsoring and working the “Beer Garden” at the Aguilar Town Park during Aguilar Days. Swing by and say hello!

Aguilar Street Festival & Car Show

AGUILAR — On August 7th from 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. there will be a whole host of activities taking place in Aguilar. The day will kick off with a Parade and Car Show at 10:00a.m. (for which you can register “day of’ at 9:30a.m.) with Trophies and Awards at 2:00p.m. There will be face painting, a bouncy house, piñatas, game booths, prizes, live music, Craft and Food Vendor booths, a beer garden, and the Grand Opening of the Aguilar Mercantile. The event is rain or shine.

Aguilar Library Celebrates Aguilar Days

AGUILAR — On Saturday, August 7, from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the Aguilar Public Library will be hosting a set of events in celebration of Aguilar Days.
Activities will include face painting and the popular “Bag of Books” event, during which you can fill a bag with books, recipes, crafts, DVDs, etcetera for only $5. Bag of Books will continue until August 31st!

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — The Trinidad Las Animas Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the Return of the Luncheon!  You are invited to the August 2021 Chamber Luncheon on August 18th in the TSJC Pioneer Room in the Sullivan Center. The luncheon starts at 12:00p.m. The sponsor for our luncheon will be the Trinidad Tourism Board.

Music from Angel Fire opens box office

COLFAX COUNTY— Music from Angel Fire today opens box office for sale of tickets for 10 concerts between August 20 and September 4, 2021. Online sales may be completed at  www.musicfromangelfire.org/sales or by telephone at 575-377-3233 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Jim Brown, president of the Music from Angel Fire board of directors, says, “Tickets for individual concerts or the season are now available.” During this 37 th season for the summer chamber music festival, concerts will be presented in Angel Fire, Taos, Las Vegas, and Raton, NM.
