SPLD presents the Bunny Hop Book Hunt

WALSENBURG— The Bunny Hop Book Hunt will be all through the month of April.  Bring your children to the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg where they will be handed a playing score sheet with three categories of books to find.  When your child finds all 3 books, bring them to the front desk and your child will win a prize!

SPLD presents the Cottontail Run

WALSENBURG— Cottontail Run will be held all through the month of April at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.  This is a chance for older children and adults to have a little springtime fun!  This is a timed task to see how quickly you can find a book in our library in both fiction and non-fiction categories.  Books found are written on the score sheet and the fastest time wins a prize!

SPLD Presents Storytime with Mrs. Flamingo

WALSENBURG— Join the Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg every Friday from 10:30-11:30 a.m.  Join our Children’s Librarian, Mrs Flamingo as she reads a story and participate in a craft related to the story!  Don’t miss this fun and creative program to share with your kids! You can also catch Storytime with Mrs. Flamingo every other Saturday at the Walsenburg Mercantile. Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. will be the next reading at the Mercantile.

Care and Share Mobile Market returns to La Veta

LA VETA—  The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. The Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The next Mobile Market visit comes to the La Veta Village parking lot on East Francisco Street on Friday, April 7, 2 to 4 p.m. Bring Your Own Bags. Weekend movie at the Fox: Champions

A former minor-league basketball coach receives a court order to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. Sunrise Service

WALSENBURG— New Hope Community Church at 801 Pennsylvania Avenue in Walsenburg will have its annual Easter sunrise service on Easter Sunday, April 9 at 6:15 a.m. A carry in fellowship breakfast follows the service. Services at the regular time from 10:00 – 11:15 will also be held.

Resurrection Sunday morning

LA VETA— Resurrection Sunday morning will be a breakfast starting at 9 a.m. and service starting at 10 a.m.  Sunday, April 9 at the 4-H building in La Veta.  The Feed Store Church is hosting the event.  Please join us and bring your friends and family.

Fire truck egg drop Easter Sunday

WALSENBURG— Join Praise Church Walsenburg 311 W 4th St on Sunday, April 9, starting at 9 a.m. for Easter activities. Breakfast starts at 9 a.m. and is free. At 10:30 will be Easter Service following at 12 p.m. join us in the parking lot for the Egg Drop and visit with the Huerfano County Fire Department.

Free tax preparation

HUERFANO— Tax Day is April 18!  Another Life Foundation offers FREE income tax preparation to eligible community members (those who make $58,000 or less). Our IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites are now open in Huerfano County.  Walk-ins every Monday from 3 – 6 p.m. at the La Veta Public Library and every Wednesday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg through April 17. JMHS Theater: presenting the Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon

WALSENBURG— On Wednesday and Thursday, April 12 and 13,  the JMHS Theater Class will be putting on a production of The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon at Washington Auditorium (201 E 5th). There is an admission fee of $5 cash for adults, $4 for students (used to help offset the cost of production rights). We hope to see you there.

The Leisure Seeker- movie matinee at LVPL

LA VETA— The La Veta Library welcomes you to join us on Thursday, April 13 at 2 p.m. as we present “The Leisure Seeker” as our matinee offering for the month.  Starring legendary award winning actors, Donald Sutherland and Helen Miran, the movie takes us on an unforgettable journey with an older couple “escaping” their life in Boston in their faithful RV for an unforgettable trip to Key West, Florida.  Filled with tender moments and surprises, it is a movie that will stay with you long after the credits. La Veta Arbor Day tree planting

LA VETA— Mayor Doug Brgoch has declared Friday, April 14 as Arbor Day for the Town of La Veta. Please join members of La Veta Park and Tree Board on Friday, April 14 at 1 p.m. at the corner of W Cascade St. and Cherry St. in La Veta for the planting of the Town’s Arbor Day tree. Keith Hauber, retired arborist, will be conducting a short educational session about proper tree planting and maintenance during and after the tree planting. Please join us as we continue our 37 year heritage as a Tree City USA town with this Arbor Day tree planting.

SPLD: Flicks at the Library

WALSENBURG—Friday, April 14, 1:30 p.m.  This month’s movie is The Princess Bride, a fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love.  He must find her after a long separation and save her.  They must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin to be reunited with each other.  Join us for a fun afternoon at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg!  Free popcorn and movie, but BYOB.  Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Barefoot in the Park by FCPA

LA VETA— Francisco Center for the Performing Arts proudly present “Barefoot in the Park”, a play by Neil Simon. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong does. Earth Day Tree Planting at Lathrop State Park

Our annual Earth Day Event pays tribute to volunteer Jon Sudar, who served at Lathrop State Park after retiring as a park ranger in the Grand Canyon.  His work helped build our history, geocache, and natural resource programs until his passing on Earth Day in 2015.

Come to the annual Fandango Cinco de Mayo performance

WALSENBURG—El Fandango folklorico dance group will be having its annual Cinco De Mayo performance on Saturday, May 6,  from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m at Washington Auditorium at the Huerfano Re-1 School admin building, 201 E. 5th Street in Walsenburg.  This will feature the end-of-year dance program for the Peakview dancers as well as the competition-level program. Cost is $5 for ages 6 and up.

Adult Roller Hockey League Championship game today

TRINIDAD— Final matches of the season for the Little Pueblo Adult Roller Hockey League will be today,  Thursday, April, 6, and puck drops at 6 p.m.  Join us at Skateland, 424 W. Main St. Trinidad for The ‘Dad Lounge Blackouts vs. The Skateland Saints and also the Freedom Road Grinders Vs. THCU Mighty Dabs. This is a free to attend event! TRINIDAD— Saturday, April 8, 5:30 p.m. at Temple Aaron of Trinidad, 407 S. Maple St. The Passover Seder at Temple Aaron (in person) is a highlight each year. This year, Rabbi Jack Shlachter will lead the Seder, and the meal will again be catered by Alys Romer, who has provided incredible meals for Temple Aaron events for many years. Seats are $36 for nonmember adults, $10 for nonmember children ages 6-13, and free for children under 5. Members of Temple Aaron may attend at no charge. The Seder is one of the highlight events at Temple Aaron each year and spots fill quickly, so please register if you would like to attend.  Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. Second Saturday Trailwork: Mahogany Trail Completion

TRINIDAD— Help Trinidad Trails Alliance put the finishing touches on our new trail segment at the Wormhole! Tentatively named “Mahogany” for the many Mountain Mahogany bushes along it. Afterwards we will have a celebratory hike / run / bike along the new trail to break it in!
As always, bring your own water, gloves, and sunscreen. Tools will be provided but if you have a favorite, bring it too. TTA will supply cold beverages. Meet at the Wormhole trail head on Saturday, April 8, 10 a.m.

Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its inaugural event for 2023; the Second Saturday Series will begin this Saturday, April 8, 7 p.m. An Open Mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at 210 West Main St. The evening begins with a featured writer Kate Kingston, poet, writer and longtime resident of Trinidad. The microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public.
Lora Nava, Chair of the Creative District’s Board of Directors is enthusiastic about this inaugural series for 2023, “The concept of the Open Mic has been an integral part of the Creative District’s effort to promote the literary arts in Trinidad and Southern Colorado. Encouraging both the written and spoken word in our youth and adult populations brings to light yet another facet of the growing artistic presence in our community.”

Book signing at TPL

TRINIDAD— After a 45-year career as a museologist, archaeologist, paleontologist and historian, Calvin B. Smith recently published his first fiction novel – about time travel.  Smith will hold a book signing on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at the Trinidad Public Library for his new book “The Mammoth Quest”.

COLFAX

Free tutoring for PreK-8 kids

COLFAX— PED announces its new tutoring service in partnership with Paper that focuses on mathematics, language arts and science. The program offers students in grades preK-8 from New Mexico Title I Schools access to free academic support from tutors on a secure platform. Participating students will receive 20 hours of tutoring at no cost to families.

Peer support groups

RATON— Are you struggling with addiction? Would you like to support a friend who is struggling with addiction? Join Elias Romero, a 17 year certified Peer Support Worker who will facilitate the group. Assisted by Zia Youth’s McLean at Zia Youth, 207 Park Ave, in Raton on Saturdays. 18- 30 year olds will meet from 9 – 10 a.m. and under 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

RAIN Members’ Meeting

Aqua Easter Egg Hunt

Colfax County Farm & Livestock Bureau Scholarship

COLFAX— The Colfax County Farm & Livestock Bureau is pleased to offer two $750 scholarships for the 2023/2024 school year. Scholarship applicants are required to be a resident of Colfax County. They may be graduating home school or high school seniors, college undergraduate, vocational or trade school students. Boating Safety Course
