Two La Vetans seriously hurt in car crash

by Brian Orr

LA VETA-Two La Vetans were critically injured Monday afternoon at 6:30 pm when their 1989 Dodge pick-up flipped on County Road 421 (up by Sulpher Springs) just west of La Veta.

The driver of the vehicle is John Wesley Holcomb, 22. His passenger is a 17 year-old youth, whose name is being withheld because he is a juvenile.

According to the state patrol, the vehicle was traveling northbound when Holcomb lost control, swerving to the left side of the road.  He overcompensated, pulling to the right, and flipped the vehicle, which rolled one and a half times, coming to rest on its roof.  Both occupants were ejected, neither were wearing a safety belt.

The speed at the time of the accident is still under investigation.  Alcohol or drugs are NOT suspected to have played a part.

Both sustained serious injuries.  Holcomb was transported to Penrose hospital in Colorado Springs, and the juvenile was flown by Flight for Life to St. Mary Corwin in Pueblo.  As of press time, the juvenile had undergone brain surgery, which he survived, but is reported to have a torn spinal column.
