Two La Veta youths invited to attend prestigious international science competition

LA VETA- Each year, the Cosmos Foundation in Houston, TX hosts an event called ‘The International Sustainable World Project Olympiad’ (I-SWEEEP) for middle and high school students from around the world.  This prestigious event promotes environmental awareness and encourages progress towards a sustainable world.

I-SWEEEP receives many thousands of applications every year from around the world and selects 450 of the most promising projects to compete in a final five day competition in Houston TX.  This year for the first time ever, two boys from La Veta have been invited to participate in this exciting event.  Both boys have spent hundreds of hours preparing and developing these projects, and their success is due in large part to the support of the La Veta School system and the guidance of teacher Pat Keeling.

One of the boys, Devon Enke, has been working on a three year project that involves the remediation of damaged or depleted agricultural soil by using a special type of microscopic fungi that forms a beneficial symbiotic relationship with crops.

Devon is inviting the community to a live demonstration of his project and to discuss the positive effects that his findings can offer humanity.  I-SWEEEP encourages its participants to educate their communities about science and the benefits of this type of program, and also to seek personal and business support to help defray the costs associated with attending this type of event.  The presentation and fundraiser will be from 4-6:30pm on Sunday March 28th at the Enke′s house on 722 E. Francisco St. and will feature refreshments and a very special musical performance by one of La Veta′s favorite performers Jacquie Gipson.

The other boy has asked not to be named.
