Two injured in house fire

Young father and son injured

WALSENBURG — Local and state fire investigators are sifting through the remains of a single family home in the 500 block of Colorado Avenue that was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning, injuring a young father and son. Shannon Kellogg who is in his 20s, and his young son, Marcus, described as a toddler, were transported to Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center by ambulance. According to WPD Captain Vince Suarez, Marcus was then flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, CO. His father was treated and released from SPRHC and went to the metro area Tuesday to be with his child. A resident of Kansas Avenue told investigators Tuesday afternoon she saw Kellogg running north up Jackson Street holding his son and yelling for help shortly after 3 am. The cause of the fire was undetermined by mid-week and Huerfano County Fire Protection District is being aided in

the investigation by Special Agent Brett Ellis of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The fire was reported at 3:06 am April 22, and La Veta Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a mutual aid call to 520 Colorado Avenue in Walsenburg. Upon hearing of the fire and injuries, WPD Chief Tommie McLallen notified the CBI. HCFPD Captain Paul Gomez said the home was completedly involved when the first response team arrived. “The front porch and two front rooms, a bedroom and living room were involved,” Gomez said. Gomez said Kellogg did not report any known malfunction that might have caused the fire. Firefighters reported a female dog and her litter of six puppies were rescued from the scene and taken to the Walsenburg Animal Shelter. Kellogg has told the authorities he will be keeping the dog, but the puppies will be put up for adoption through the animal shelter. Walsenburg City Administrator David Johnston said he was notified by Huerfano County 911 Dispatch Center Tuesday morning that a person had called reporting the fire hydrants near the home that burned were not working. “I called Gerald Jerant, Huerfano District Fire Chief to see if I had misunderstood the dispatch communication. He assured me the two hydrants identified worked perfectly, with the Huerfano Fire District vehicle hooked to the Jackson and Colorado hydrant and the La Veta fire truck hooked to the Kansas Ave. fire hydrant. The Huerfano truck attacked the fire from the front of the structure and the La Veta truck worked from the back,” Johnston said. Jerant said 11 firefighters from La Veta responded to the fire along with nine firefighters from HCFPD.
