Tracksters set benchmarks

PUEBLO — John Mall and Hoehne were two of the 25 teams competing at the CSU-Pueblo Early Bird Invitational on March 12. Our local athletes set their marks and baseline times and distances they will need to improve in their march to the state tournament in mid-May.

John Mall Panthers Garrett Quintana and Andrew Vigil opened the season with impressive placements in the field events. Quintana set the bar high for his return state championship run, with a throw of 164-4 feet in the discus and a first place ribbon. His throw was only 5” off his state championship throw last season. Vigil placed second with a throw of 158.7 feet. In the shot, Quintana finished first with a throw of 47-11.5 feet. Vigil took third with a throw of 44-10.5 feet. Santos Reyna placed 5th in the triple jump soaring 40 feet. Quintana is currently 1st in the state with the early results.

Hoehne Farmer Shaelyn Walton continued to place high, taking 3rd in the 400 meter dash, 4th in the 800 meter run and 8th in the high jump with a jump of 4-10 feet. The 800M relay team placed 6th. Jordon Trujillo continued with her state qualifying throws on the discus, finishing 4th at 93-3 feet and 3rd in the shot at 32 feet. Zoe Revas placed 9th in the 100M hurdles. Jacob Yates placed 6th in the 300M hurdles (44.28 seconds) and 8th in the 110M Huedles in a time of 17.68 seconds.
