Three Fs for Stockgrowers Picnic

by Carol Dunn

LA VETA- The Huerfano Basin Stockgrowers Association had plenty of fun, food and fellowship during its member picnic on July 26 at the 4-H Barn in La Veta.  About eighty people attended the event, the first of its kind in many years.  One of the goals of the Association is to encourage participation by young people, and about a fifth of those in attendance were youth.

The band KS Connection provided music during the picnic, and one attendee described the entertainment as “delightful.”

The stockgrowers were especially gratified to have in attendance State Representative Wes McKinley and his wife.  Rep. McKinley spoke briefly on a wide range of issues facing southern Colorado livestock producers, among them the Pinon Canyon military expansion.

About $500 was raised for the Association’s scholarship fund through a silent auction and a raffle for a 12-gauge shotgun and a 30-06 rifle.

According to Association President Dave Stroh, “the picnic was an amazing success, and everyone had fun.”
