Walsenburg

1885: Benton Canon and Dr. T.F. Martin provided us with a musical program last Friday evening. 1893: Mr. Tarabino has a meat market in connection with his store at the Walsen coal mines. All he needs now for a complete outfit is a saloon. Then in the eyes of many he will be O.K. 1898: The old tailor shop was removed from the corner opposite the court house and now that the lots are being surrounded by a new picket fence, it is quite an improvement. 1903: Mayor Dick appointed Oregon Pharis to be town marshal in place of Thomas Griffin who resigned and moved to Pueblo. 1908: The ladies aid group in Gardner ended their first year showing a $200 profit, some of which they used to weather board and paint the church and pay the pastor’s salary. They started the new year with nearly $50 in their treasury. 1914: Sheriff J.B. Farr says a $1,000 reward has been offered for the arrest and conviction of the murderer of William Dick on the road to La Veta four miles west of Walsenburg on February 13. 1919: The roads to Pueblo and La Veta are still impassable after the snowstorm last week and windstorms since then. 1924: The water fountain at the corner of Seventh and Main streets was totally destroyed when a car hit it, but the fountain saved the plate glass windows of Baxter Hardware. 1929: Doveton’s Inc., is the new clothing store in the former Fulton meat market on Main Street in the block between the First National Bank and Krier’s. 1934: Miss Amanda Simpson, county superintendent of schools, says thanks to the generosity of Huerfano County residents most all of the rural schools are now supplied with some type of books. 1939: Monday’s blizzard damaged the stoker of the heating plant at Huerfano County High School, causing the school’s closure for two days and delighting the students. 1944: Between 8,000 and 10,000 turkey poults will arrive in the county between April 20 and May 5. Turkey raising is a rapidly expanding operation in Huerfano County. 1949: Senida Roybal, 51, was killed in an auto accident on the way to her daughter’s wedding in a car driven by her husband. She leaves four daughters, three sons and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Alarid. 1954: John Dinise, co-publisher of the Walsenburg World-Independent, has been elected a director of the Colorado Press Association. 1960: The historic Baxter Hardware, more recently O’Byrne Hardware at Seventh and Main streets, has been sold to Standard Oil Company which will raze the old building to erect a modern service station. 1965: Eleven members of the Rainbow Girls raised $112.97 for benefit of the Heart Fund in a house to house canvass Sunday. 1970: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lazzarini celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married three months after she arrived here as Rose Lenzini from Italy and was working for a family in Ideal, on February 14, 1920 in St. Mary Church. 1976: Winds of 90 to 95 miles per hour Monday morning shattered plate glass windows and downed large trees in Walsenburg and caused the closure of Interstate 25 due to blowing dirt and sand. 1982: Walsenburg is a yoyo. Two weeks ago the temperature dropped to 24 degrees below zero and Sunday it was 70 above. 1988: Mountain Bell will change the local. area code from 970 to 719 as of March 5. 1994: Earning all As at John Mall High School in the senior class were Emmet Beeville, Caleb Boutillier, Charlcy Daher, Lisa Rice, Gabi Sandoval and Jena Vail.

La Veta

1882: The route agent threw the wrong sack out of the railroad car on Tuesday morning, which left this community without mail that day. 1887: Selected as judges of election for the April 3 town election were John F. Moore, D.D. Ryus and Charles F. Martin. 1892: Town board levied a ten mill levy to raise $1,000 for town purposes. 1897: Reverend J.F. Berry came up from the county seat Wednesday and on Thursday tied up the publisher of this highly moral sheet [the La Veta Advertiser] to Miss Laura Spielman, The couple is at home in the Shafer residence. 1902: Charles Alexander and his mother, Mrs. J.M. Alexander, returned from their lengthy visit to North Carolina, where they saw many familiar faces of thirty years ago. 1907: Railroad conductor W.E. Smith has sold his fine residence in Alamosa and will move his family to their ranch near La Veta to make their permanent home. 1912: Born, daughters to Frank Archuleta, Thomas Foster and William Lenox. 1917: A county high school in a county this size and geographical makeup is practically useless except to the community in which the school house is located, so unless the town of Walsenburg foots the bill the entire county will have to bear the expenses. 1923: Mrs. Kit Magee has returned from the ski festival in Steamboat Springs and reports that ski jumping is a fascinating sport. 1928: Twelve clerks generally work in the company store at Alamo mine, including Clay Baione who has been laid off on account of the dull condition at the camp. 1933: Joe Ferrari will cause some of us to die of heart failure if he keeps increasing the height of those truckloads of props and hay he transports through town. 1938: Huerfano County will be allowed to add 100 more men to the Works Progress Administration employment list. 1943: Died, Robert E. Doles, born in 1867 in Ohio. He came to La Veta in 1905 with his wife Alta Mae who died in 1934 with her infant. He leaves his children Alvin, Lester, Mrs. Orville Smith, Mrs. Clayton Hern and Bertha Doles. 1950: Coach Lally said if you put Pat Davis and Russell Beamer in the same room they would talk each other to death. 1955: Larry Drury and Ernest Bergamo of La Veta High School were selected to the all-star team in the District “C” tournament held near Pueblo last weekend. The Redskins placed fourth but won the sportsmanship trophy. 1960: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ferrari have returned from a three month trip that took them through 21 states plus Washington D.C. 1966: The Redskins whipped Sanford 88-76 to end their conference play with an 11-3 record. John Klikus set a league scoring record with 10 field goals and 10 charity tosses for a total of 36 points. 1971: Luigi Andreoli, 88, a former coal miner born in Italy in 1882, has died. He leaves five step-sons, Steve, Albert, Marco and Louis Pierotti and John Castelli, step-daughters Virginia Bartalussi, Julia Supancic and Mary Leri, niece Jean Leri and nephews Robert and Gino Andreoli. 1977: The Huerfano County snowpack is still between 70 and 80 percent of normal but recent storms have brought the parched plains much relief. 1982: Although 15 residents have taken petitions to run for the six trustee seats available in the April town election, only one, Garry Mayfield, is running for mayor. 1987: Members of Christ the King church will serve a wild game dinner March 15 in the school cafeteria as a fundraiser. Cost will be $5 for adults, $4 senior citizens and $2.50 for children. 1993: Of more than 30 applicants, Michelle “Mickey” Smith was unanimously selected as La Veta’s deputy marshal, the first female to serve with the town’s law enforcement. She is a former firefighter from Alaska.
