SPRINGER — Even though it is summer and they are technically on vacation, that didn’t stop Springer Girl Scout Troop 10598 from volunteering their time to post colors for the Springer Electric Cooperative’s annual meeting.
On Wednesday, June 8, people from all over rural New Mexico met at the Simm Brown Gym in Springer for food, fun, and chances to win prizes. Troop 10598 presented the United States and New Mexico flags leading attendees in both the Pledge of Allegiance and the NM State flag pledge before reciting the Girl Scout pledge, ushering in the festivities.
All totaled, 236 co-op members attended the meeting, up nearly ten percent from last year’s 224. During the two-hour meeting, numerous items of business were discussed, including announcing the names of 24 high school and college students from all over the state to whom the co-op doled out $22,000 in scholarships.
They also announced the overall winner of their annual coloring contest, Holly Ward, a 2nd grader from Maxwell Elementary who received a $100 purse for her artistic efforts. The big prizes given out at the end of the meeting were a big screen television won by Charlie Duran from Wagon Mound and a washer and dryer set won by Emily DeHerrera of Roy.
Following the Girl Scouts’ retrieval of the flags, everyone in attendance was treated to a bar-b-q beef sandwich lunch.
