Hoehne Lady Farmers tied for #5

HOEHNE — A pair of league wins moved the Hoehne Lady Farmers into a two-way tie for fifth place this week in the tough 2A-District 6 League.

In their first game, the Farmers easily defeated the Crowley County Chargers 59-39. Shaelyn Walton led all scorers with 26 points. Her season average of 20.8 points ranks her #4 in scoring in 2A in the state. Averie Navarette scored 14 while Kamryn Baca-Cordova scored 11 points.

The following night, the Farmers rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Las Animas 34-33 as they overcame a 25-19 third quarter deficit outscoring Las Animas 15-8.

The Farmers have three games remaining on their schedule. The first is an away game tonight against Fowler who is second in the league. Tipoff is 4 pm. Tomorrow, the Rocky Ford Meloneers will be at Hoehne for a 4 pm game. They will close out their season at home against the John Mall Panthers Tuesday at 4 pm.

Farmers down two

HOEHNE — The Farmers men’s basketball team lost a pair of games this past week, first to the number one team in the state, Crowley County Chargers, 57-32, then to last place Las Animas 70-65. The losses put the Farmers into a tie for sixth place with Swink in league action.

The Farmers have three more games on their schedule to complete the regular season. Their schedule includes the number two, three, and five ranked league teams. A loss of two games will place the Farmers into seventh place and a rematch against Fowler in the first round of the districts in two weeks. There were no stats available for the Las Animas game.

Panther regular season nears end

WALSENBURG — The John Mall Panthers men are nearing the finale of their regular season, going 0-3 in league action this past week. The three league losses were at the hands of the Swallow Charter Academy Spartans 41-38, the Swink Lions in a heartbreaker 47-46 loss decided in the game’s final seconds, and on the Crowley County Chargers home court Tuesday, 56-15. The losses put the Panthers in a two-way tie with the Spartans for fifth place. Both schools have 4-8 league records. Two games remain on the Panthers’ schedule and three on SCA’s.

John Mall will play their final home game tonight against Hoehne, then close out their season at Hoehne on February 13. With two or three games remaining in league play, the first round placement of the district tournament, which begins in two weeks, is unclear. Should the Panthers finish in fifth, they will play the number four team. First plays eighth, second plays seventh, and third plays sixth. Statistics for John Mall’s three games were not posted by the coaches by press deadline.

Lady Panthers looking to move up in league rankings.

CROWLEY CO — The John Mall Panthers went 1-2 this past week with a disappointing loss to Crowley County which moved them into fifth place behind Swallows in District 6 standings. The Chargers defeated the Panthers by the score of 46 to 34. Earlier in the week, The Panthers defeated the last place Swallows Charter Spartans by the score of 59-26 with a strong offensive performance and solid defense, talking a 30-12 lead into the locker room at the half. They continued their control in the game outscoring the Spartans 23-14 in the second half to win the game. Against Swink, the league leading team and #4 in the state, the Lions displayed their strength on offense winning 66-20. Unlike their previous encounter when the mercy rule kicked in, the coaches decided to play their second string as every Lion saw action.

Miners drop eleventh in row

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Miner boys team lost their eleventh game in a row to Colorado Springs Christian by the score of 72-30. Mercifully, the running clock in the fourth quarter prevented an even larger blowout.

The Lions opened a game with a 25-8 first quarter lead and continued mauling the defenseless Miners for thirty-two minutes. Not stats were posted as of press deadline. The games against Rye on Tuesday and Pueblo Central were not included in this story as results were not available.

Bulldogs Martinez continues ruff play

PRIMERO — The Lady Bulldogs’ Kirsten Martinez continues her aggressive play, scoring 16 points with 15 boards in the Bulldog loss to Des Moines 53-31, and 23 points in the 68-31 loss to Antonito. In both games, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start falling behind early and were never able to catch up. Against the Des Moines Demons, the Dawgs fell behind 23-3 in the first. Against Antonito it was a 40-11 point deficit.

Martinez is the team’s leading scorer with an average of 22.7 points per game and is ranked #1 in the state in scoring in 1A. Second in scoring is La Veta’s Kaylee Corsentino with 19.6 points. If you compared Martinez across all classes in the state, she would rank #4.

In spite of Primero’s record, the Bulldogs could be the spoiler as the season nears completion. With four games remaining, the Bulldogs have a chance to move up in the standings from #6 to #5. Primero will be at Sangre de Cristo February 9 and at home against Moffat on Saturday with a 2 pm tip off.

Bulldog Damelio takes bite out of opponent’s defense

PRIMERO — Primero’s Vince Damelio exploded in the Bulldogs’ past three games, scoring 87 points against his opponents. The effort helped the Bulldogs win their third game in a row against league opponents and move them into fourth place in 1A District 6.

The Bulldogs have come on strong this past week, defeating the Antonito Trojans 58-28, the Des Moines Demons 68-20, and Raton 70-56. Damelio scored 29 points against the Trojans, 23 against the Demons, and a season-high 35 points against Raton. He was helped by Antonio Cordova with 21 points in the game against Antonito and 12 against Des Moines.

Also scoring in double digits were Joey Archuleta with 12 points against the Trojans and 10 against Raton, and Lance Peters with 10 against Raton. Damelio is the #4 scorer in 1A. Primero will be put to the test when they face Sangre de Cristo on February 9th. SDC leads the league and is the #3 team in the state’s RPI ranking. The Bulldogs are #14.

Wrestling

In a change from the usually productive weekend meets, both the John Mall Panthers and the Trinidad Miners had some time off before the Regional tournaments which begin tomorrow.

The Miners by-passed the 3A Tri-Peaks League tournament with the hopes of keeping everyone healthy, and the Panthers had a home three-team meet last Friday. One of the highlights of that event was the 5-4 win by Wesley Van Meter over Brent Benvadies of Del Norte. It pitted the number one verses two wrestlers in the state.

Van Meter was trailing 4-3 with nine seconds remaining in the match before he scored a two point takedown for the win. These two gladiators will meet again this weekend at the Region 2 tournament to likely determine the number one seed at the state tournament next week.
