Hoehne boys’ season ends in Round 1

SWINK — Following their end of season win over John Mall, the Hoehne Farmers met the Swink Lions in the first round of District 6 action losing 71-66 and were eliminated from further action. The game wasn’t decided until late in the fourth quarter as the Lions outscored the Farmers by five, which was the difference in the game. Hoehne battled back from 39- 27 at halftime to outscore the Lions 26-14 in the third. The statistics were not available at presstime. Swink 21 18 14 18 71 Hoehne 11 16 26 13 66

Primero boys defeat Manzanola, advance to district semi-finals by David J. Santistevan, Jr

WESTON — Behind two freshman and a sophomore, the Primero Bulldogs (15-4) advanced to the Colorado Class 1A District-6 boys semifinals with a convincing 61-20 win at home over the Manzanola Bobcats.

Freshman Antonio Cordova scored 11-points and grabbed nine rebounds; fellow freshman Lance Peters also had 11-points, was five of seven from the free-throw line, and grabbed down eight rebounds in the win. Sophomore Andrew Lutz added seven points on three of four shooting. Primero shot 52% from the field and caused over 20 Manzanola turnovers.

Primero, the district’s #3 seed will face #2 seed Creede Miners (17-3) in a rematch of a game played at Primero High School back on January 13, in which Creede stole a 58-53 win. Creede is ranked #3 in the RPI rankings; Primero is #11. Creede blew out Moffat/Mt. Valley Tuesday night 93-50.

The semi-final rematch in Class 1A D-6 will tip off at 8 pm. in Alamosa at Adams State University. The other D-6 semi-final will have #1 seed Sierra Grande (17-3) vs. #4 seed Sangre de Cristo (17-3) at 5 pm at Adams State. Sierra Grande beat Centennial and Sangre de Cristo escaped Cotopaxi 52-50. The Class 1A Boys District Championship will be Saturday at 3:30 pm.

Hoehne girls advance to district semi-finals

ROCKY FORD — As the Colorado Class 2AA Girls District-6 Playoffs roll on, the #6 seeded Hoehne Lady Farmers (11-10) beat John Mall in a game last week 46-42. Then, on Tuesday night, with girls scoring on double figures, Hoehne upset the #3 seed Rocky Ford Lady Meloneers 45-36 to advance to the 2AA D-6 Girls Semi-Finals on Thursday in La Junta.

“We played an absolutely complete game, one of the best games if not the best game we played all season,” Lady Farmer head coach Ryan Coberly said, adding, We are playing our best, especially on defense, at the right time of the year.”

Senior forward Shaelyn Walton scored a game high 13-points. Senior guard Jaylyn Tortorelli added 11points; junior forward Kamryn Baca-Cordova chipped in with 10-points and sophomore forward Averie Navarette had eight points.

The Lady Farmers will play in La Junta at Otero Jr. College on tonight Thursday Feb. 22 at about 6:30 pm against #2 seed Fowler (14-5). The other D-6 semi-final will have #1 seed Swink (17-2) vs. #4 seed Las Animas (9-11).

The 2AA D-6 Girls Championship will be Friday Feb. 23 at 6:30 pm at OJC in La Junta. The third place game will tip off at 3:30 pm on Feb. 23. All four teams remaining will advance to the Colorado Class 2AA Regional next weekend. Teams this weekend will be playing for seeding at Regionals.
