Spanish Peaks Community Foundation Gala in Walsenburg to honor six

WALSENBURG — Honoring those who have truly made a difference in our area is the idea behind the Spanish Peaks Community Foundation LEGENDS Hall of Fame Gala. This third annual black-tie fundraising Gala will be held Saturday, October 18th at the Huerfano County Community Center beginning at 5 pm. Dance music is being provided by the ever popular Dano Weston Band. The Spanish Peaks Community Foundation was established to raise money in an endowment fund, the investment growth of which can be distributed county-wide for projects and programs that improve Huerfano County, as well as help non-profit community groups who work on projects concerning youth, health, economic development, housing and education. The Foundation also feels that part of the rich heritage of the area falls within its founders and long time families and therefore wants to recognize these “Legends” at the annual banquet. The honorees were nominated from within the community and are people who fit the criteria for their various contributions to

the region. Some of those being honored are still with us and others have passed away but their names and families have remained and continue to work and build in the area, continuing those long time deep roots in Huerfano County. Long time math teacher Donald Kynion, now living in Scottsbluff, Nebraska will be honored. Nominated by several of his students, Kynion touched the lives of many throughout his 30 year teaching career which not only included math, but coaching basketball and golf. He taught integrity and perseverance in and out of the classroom. Edward Joseph (deceased) will be remembered for his dedication to veterans in the Walsenburg area which resulted in the Veterans Home for the area. Gardner rancher Sergio Abila, (deceased) is being remembered for his success as a rancher, his job creation, and his humanitarian efforts. Sam Taylor, (deceased), is being remembered for his dedication to Huerfano County as our state Senator from Huerfano County. Fred Walsen (deceased) will be honored for his early entrepreneal and philanthropic efforts in Huerfano County.
