HUERFANO— The Spanish Peaks Community Foundation Legends Hall of Fame Gala will be held this year on Saturday night September 7th at the Huerfano County Community Center.
This may be an early announcement, however, several local Huerfano County people will be honored and the foundation would like nominees from the communities of Walsenburg, LaVeta and Gardner.
Last fall the first Legends Hall of Fame honored six people: (three were posthumous) Jeannette Faris Thach, Frances Nelson Vallejo, Louis B. Sporleder Sr., and those living were Ed Ludvik, Monsignor Howard Delaney and Myrna Falk. There could be fewer than that number this fall.
The nomination forms are available at the office of the Huerfano World Journal.
This Hall of Fame was established to honor individuals who, by their extraordinary effort, have contributed to the betterment or enhancement of Huerfano County.
Nominees are considered on the basis of contributions in the following areas: all facets of education; business and labor; arts and humanities; philanthropy; government; law; science and technology; and health and human services. If many nominations are received some names could be held back for another year. Selections are made without regard to gender, race, religion or national origin by a small committee from within the Spanish Peaks Community Foundation.
A compelling narrative of the qualifications of the nominee is necessary (not more than two pages typewritten). This should include specifics of what they have done for Huerfano County that has made it a better place to live, work and raise a family. This nomination should include work above and beyond just doing their job. Also there should be two additional letters of support from persons who have pertinent information about the nominee, including friends, relatives, historians or business associates.
The persons selected for the Hall of Fame do not have to be Huerfano County natives, nor do they have to be current residents. Posthumous nominations are also accepted as there may be a historical nomination of people who were significant to the history of the county. Nominations must be in, in writing by July 15th, 2013 as inductees are selected by early August of each year and are honored guests at the dinner in September. Their photos will grace the walls of the Huerfano County Courthouse alongside those of the 2012 Legends.
