Smooth Start for RE-1 School Year

by Jaye Sudar

WALSENBURG- The RE-1 meeting was short and to the point.  Dawn Olson and Erin Jerant have worked to re-organize the meetings.  Principals now deliver written reports to the board and other information will be presented during the meetings.  Olson presented board members with a chair pin to remind them that what the district does today has long term effects on those children too young to be students.  The district needs to adopt the long view when it comes to education.

Enrollment figures are close to those predicted last year. Gardner has 86 students.  Peakview has 313 and John Mall has 160.  It is hoped that enrollment will increase after Labor Day.  All principals reported that the first few days of school have gone smoothly.

Superintendent Olson reported that various name changes were needed at the sports complex due to ADA regulations.  She also reported that the ′crows nest′ is not available for use and the announcer’s booth will have to do double duty.  The locker rooms are still not usable, but there has been progress on the concession stands.

In other business, the board approved policy on graduation requirements, a list of dates and places for the board meetings for the 2010-2011 school year, and the amendments made to the superintendent′s contract.  Additions were made to the lists of substitute teachers, secretaries, and activity bus drivers.  The District Accountability Committee was approved as well as designated personnel to deal with suspension of students.  There was also approval of staff hirings that are being funded via Federal Grants.  Two families notified the district of their intent to home school and graduation was set for May 21, 2011 at 10 am.
