    The Huerfano County Republican Central Committee held their biennial elections at a meeting on Thurs. Feb. 12, 2009.  Those elected as officers for the next two years are: Dick Chenault, Chairman; Brian Manning, Vice-Chairman; Linda Neldner, Secretary; and Andrea Manning, Treasurer.  These officers will be the representatives for Huerfano Republicans to the Republican State Central Committee and will be working hard to continue the progress of Republicans in Huerfano County.

    In other business, the regular meeting night was changed to the third Tuesday of the month. This change was made to accommodate those who could not attend due to conflict.  In particular, the Walsenburg City Council should not be meeting at the same time.  The monthly meetings are held at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Ave.,  in Walsenburg at 6 pm.  All Huerfano Republicans are encouraged to join us and enjoy our meetings and speakers. The American Legion, Post #16, Walsenburg, CO, will have its monthly meeting on Tues. Feb. 24, 7 pm at the Iron Horse Restaurant, 503 W. 7th St in Walsenburg.  District officers will be in attendance.  Members should arrive earlier, 6:15 pm if they plan to eat dinner, such that the meeting can begin on time.

    Post #16 was founded in 1919 following World War I and is among the very first Posts to be founded in Colorado.  American Legion Posts were founded as a group dedicated to care for veteran’s widows, orphans and injured veterans and this remains the practice today.

Huerfano Memorial Hospital Auxiliary met on Mon. Feb. 9, 2009.  No meeting was held on Jan. 12, due to weather.  Michelle Gilchrist, from Activities in the CSV Nursing Home presented a request for a thermal laminating machine and supplies.  The matter was tabled until the next meeting.

    Sherry Gomez, Emergency Services Director, spoke to members regarding the need of cubical curtains for the emergency rooms.  She presented members with a cost estimate for replacement and requested their consideration.  The matter was tabled until the next meeting.    Roberta Bustos of SPRHC Outreach Clinic gave information booklets, and a flyer, inviting members to visit and use their facilities on Kansas Avenue.

    Todd Oberhue, CEO of SPRHC appeared and thanked everyone for their support and services.  He announced the addition of a new physician, Dr. Lynne Johnson, to the staff in March.  Other positions are hopeful.

    Gary Dickey, Adm. CSV Nursing Home was present, and also thanked everyone for their support. He stated the Culture Change Program and Memories in the Making Art Project are progressing very well.  This year, nine pictures will be presented, and scheduled for April 26, 2009.

    All members present voted to purchase a massage table and exercycle requested for the veterans’ exercise room.

    The number of hours for the month of December, were 372.5, with 4,382 for the year.  Total hours handiwork was 812.5, and a grand total of 5,194.5 for 2008.  The number of hours for the month of January 2009 were 298.

    Members decided to have a door prize drawing for an afghan in April.  Tickets will be available at the gift shop.

    Installation of officers was held by Frances Lenzotti: Monica Bustos; President, Cleo Bellah; Vice President, Bobbie Cisneros; Secretary, and Bob Armour Treasurer.
