Scott King new chairman for Board of County Commissioners

 by Bill Knowles

WALSENBURG—Scott King was chosen as the new chairman of the Huerfano County Board of County Commissioners during the first commission meeting of 2011.  Roger Cain was picked as the pro tem.

In other appointments, Lewis Edmunson and Dale Davis were reappointed to sit on the Planning and Zoning Commission until 2014.  Debra Malone and William Stark were reappointed to sit on the county’s Tourism Board until 2014.

The county will see a $20,000 credit from a revision on the mill levy.  The credit will be added to the county’s refund and abatement fund.  The error occurred because of the misplacement of a decimal point.  The levy was originally listed as .24 and should have been noted as .024, decreasing the mill levy and thus creating the credit.

Fire restrictions in the county were reduced from stage one to “no restrictions.”  And any action on a mutual aid agreement between the county and the La Veta Fire Protection District was tabled until next Wednesday’s county commission meeting while more information was collected.

The Department of Public Health and Environment has closed its drinking water enforcement order for the Gardner Water and Sanitation District.  In a letter from the DPHE to the county commissioners it was recognized that the district, under the control of the county commission since early 2010, responded to and has met its obligations.

The Huerfano County extension office has posted new office hours.  The extension office will be open Monday through Thursday, 8 am until 12 pm and one until four pm in the afternoons.

Comcast has notified the county that it will not fund the Technical Assistance Program for 2011 .
