Redskins ruffle Thinderbirds feathers

by David Tesitor

MOSCA- The La Veta Redskins remain undefeated as they plucked victory from the Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds 56-22.  The explosive Redskin offensive players have scored 192 points at the midpoint of the season while giving up on average only 19 points per game.

Sangre opened the scoring with a 45-yard run, slipping past the defense.  After that, it was all Redskins.  Ron Ortivez executed the option with precision en route to accumulating 144 yards rushing on twenty attempts.  Ortivez ran for three touchdowns.  He also threw for 106 yards.   His favorite receiver was Dakota Mason at 93 yards, and he found the promised land three times on completions of 35, 17  and 15 yards.  Trey Price gave his best rushing performance of the season with 163 yards on 19 carries and one TD.  Clancy Kreutzer also ran one in for a touchdown from the 7-yard line.

On the other side of the ball, Jared Rae was the leading tackler with 8 and 5 assists while Kaleb Bird had 7.  The Skins also forced two fumbles and two interceptions.

The Redskins have been flirting with entrance into the Colorado Prep top ten rankings, but have stiff competition with Simla and Miami Yoder who are also knocking at the door.  All three teams are 4-0.  For the Redskins to advance and have a shot at the top ten, they should not look past next week’s opponent, Mountain Valley, a team which will come into La Veta with a 0-4 record.  After this game, they will then get into the meat of their schedule, facing two league powerhouses:  Antonito, ranked number 5, the following week and then Sanford, ranked number 7, on October 16.
