Redskins roll past Sargent

by David Tesitor
MONTE VISTA- The La Veta Redskins won their fourth baseball game in a row against the Sargent Farmers and are sitting atop the Southern Peaks league with a 4-0 record.
La Veta dominated all aspects of play, taking the Farmers 13-5 in the first half of their doubleheader. Jon Brunelli pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits with five earned runs. He also threw eleven strike outs and walked only two batters, allowing the defense to throw batters out on bases. In the first game, all the starting rotation had at least one hit. Braxton Morgan and Evan Arnold both went three for five. Morgan had two runs batted in while Arnold had one. Kyon Kreutzer and Adam Kimbrel both went two for three. In all, the Skins hammered Sargent with seventeen hits.
The hitting momentum continued in the second game as La Veta exploded for twelve fourth-inning runs and cycled their order twice to give the Redskins a 16-7 run lead. Clancey Kreutzer opened on the mound, pitching five complete innings, giving up four hits and five earned runs. Two runs were scored off errors.
During the game, John Arnold, Brunelli and Stephen Blessman hammered the ball out of the park for homeruns. This was Blessman’s first HR of the season. Arnold went four for five with four RBI’s and completed the batting cycle with a single, double, triple and his solo homerun shot. Braxton Morgan also had four RBI’s going three for four.
Brunelli and Clancey Kreutzer had the hottest bats of the day, batting .1000. Brunelli went five for five and had four stolen bases. Kreutzer went three for three with three stolen bases.
According to Redskins’ head coach Nace Huff, “we played real well and are getting better with every game. I like where we are going.” The Skins dropped their first six games of the season and are now leading their division with several more games remaining. They played Sierra Grande Tuesday and the results were too late to post. They play Center (2-2 league and 5-6 overall) at home Saturday with the first pitch at 10 am.
