Redskins ranked ninth in preps

CENTER- The La Veta Lady Redskins were given a late Christmas present last week when they were named to the Colorado Preps High School top ten. They proved they deserved the recognition when they won a pair of games over the weekend.  On Thurs. Jan. 7, they defeated Center 59-37 and on Saturday, they demolished the Del Norte Tigers 53-28.

    Against the Center Vikings, Shelby Morgan continued her offensive dominance as she went 8 and 0 from the field and 3 of 4 from the line, scoring 19 points.  The Skins’ defense came alive in the final quarter to shut down the Viking comeback attempt.  Morgan is leading scorer of District 1 and the league with 139 points.  Her weekend performance is in line with her 19.9 points per game average.

    On Saturday, the Redskins dominated the Tigers with a full-court press and man-to-man coverage, shutting down the Tiger offensive threat.  The Skins combined for nineteen defensive rebounds.  Christina Koutnik was the team’s rebound leader with nine.  Teammate Sami Willhoite is the league’s second leading scorer with 96 points, averaging 13.7 points per game.

    The weekend victories gave La Veta a 5-3 overall record.  They are atop the league with a 3-0 record. The victory against the Tigers was their fifth in a row.  As a team, the Redskins are shooting 43 % from the field and 41% from the three-point line.  They are shooting 61% from the line.

    La Veta will travel to Hoehne tonight for a non-division contest against the Farmers.  On Friday, they will host the Sargent Farmers with action beginning at 3:30.
