Redskins honored

LA VETA- The 8 Man Class A football outstanding player picks were awarded on Monday and several members of the La Veta football team were among the elite.  First team all-conference included seniors Trey Price and Ron Ortivez.  Ortivez was also given first team honors for his outstanding play as a punter.  Ortivez averaged just over 35 yards a punt for the season including a season long of 63.  He also recorded two 200-yard plus games this season and 1,227 yards on the season or 127 yards per game. He also threw for 25 touchdowns.  Price was strong on the ground averaging just over 6.28 yards per carry and 4 touchdowns.  Also receiving honorable mention honors were Seniors Jesse Pacheco and Devon Jensen.  Pacheco and Jensen were aggressive defensively and were among the team’s leading tacklers.  For the season, Pacheco had 5.5 sacks.

    Dakota Mason was selected as the Co-Most Valuable Player of the Mountain Division for his overall athletic play.  Mason helped his team in many ways.  He led the team in receiving with 543 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 19.43 yards per reception.  He had 92 tackles including 18 sacks, recovered two fumbles, returned punts and was the team’s leading kick-off specialist with 443 yards.

    Coach Don Price was named as Coach of the Year for the Mountain Division for his outstanding work as a leader coaching the Redskins to an overall 7-4 record which included their first trip to the Sweet Sixteen tournament in over ten years.  When contacted after the announcement, he commented, “Yea we have a great group of kids.  They did a great job,” not once acknowledging his own accolades. His comments testify to his commitment to his players.
