Redskins have busy weekend

HOEHNE, LA VETA- The La Veta Redskins went 2-1 this weekend in.  Their long weekend began against the Hoehne Farmers Thursday night, when they dismantled the Farmers 60-29.  Josiah Christian and Dalton Mason exploded for 29 of the team’s points.  The Skins dominated the boards, pulling in 32 rebounds.

La Veta was not as lucky on Friday when they fell to the visiting Sargent Farmers, 53-49.  Sargent came into La Veta as the seventh-ranked team in the state and remains atop the Southern Peaks Division (4-0) with an overall 10-0 record.  La Veta fell to 3-1 in the league and 8-3 overall.  La Veta entered the game as the number twelve team in the state.

The Redskins played solid defense but scored only 18 of 46 from the field and converted only 3 of 19 three-point shots.  According to Coach Kreutzer, “The Farmer defense would not allow us to get inside for the shot.”

On Saturday, the Redskins found relief against Custer County.  The Cougars played a close first half before the Redskin defense stopped their charge.  The Skins’ shooting woes continued as they went 5 of 15 from the three-point circle and 20 of 45 from the field.  Saturday’s game was a more concise, team-oriented style of play; the Redskins worked together to get the job done.

For the season the team is shooting 47 % from the two-point range and a dismal 28% from the three.  Dakota Mason is the team’s leading scorer with 176 points (17.6 per game) while Josiah Christian scored 162 (14.73 per game).  Christian leads the team in rebounds with 38 offensive and 43 defensive.

The Redskins travel to Sanford tomorrow, January 22.
