Redskins fall short

by Dreama Ortivez
LA VETA- The La Veta Redskin football team lost to the Sangre de Cristo T-Birds last Friday 28 to 26.
The Redskins kicked the ball to start the game which gave the T-Birds the ball first. The Redskins held the T-Birds on their first possession and forced a punt. Brandon Morgan received the ball, and after a return of about 12 yards, the Redskins’ offense took the field. They drove the ball down the field to the T-Bird 2-yard line.
The T-Birds stopped the Redskins on four consecutive plays and regained possession. It appeared that the Redskin defense was going to force another punt, but on 3rd and nine the T-Birds executed a screen play that netted a 90-yard touchdown. Sangre converted the two-point score to take the lead 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was also a defensive struggle and both teams exchanged punts. The T-Birds were able to capitalize on missed tackles by the Redskins when the T-Birds’ quarterback Lance Blades, broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run.
The Redskins did not go down easily. On their next offensive possession, they gave the T-Birds a heavy dose of run. Kyon Kreutzer scored the first Redskin touchdown with 2 yards out and converted a 2-point conversion on an Adam Ortivez run. The Redskin defensive also toughed up, forcing a 3 and out on the T-Birds’ next offensive series. With a little under three minutes before the half, WD Arnold scored a touchdown to tie the ball game.
The second half of the game was almost a carbon copy of the first half of the game. Sangre scored first, but the Redskins answered right back. By the fourth quarter, the T-Birds were up by one touchdown. Ortivez completed a pass to Zac Brunelli and the two-point conversion was denied. This put the Redskin fans on their feet as the game became very intense. The Redskins gave all they had but came up short, losing to the Sangre T-Birds 28 to 26.
Coach Ortivez was disappointed, “even playing as badly as we did, we had a chance to win in the end, but we did not execute. It did not help that we were missing three of our starters. We need to regroup and get ready for Sierra Grande, which is another league game.”
The Redskins will be back in action on their home territory tomorrow night. Kick-off is at 7 pm under the La Veta lights.
