Redskins beat Indians

La Veta still ranked number 6 in State

SANFORD- The Lady Redskins shut down the Sanford Indians last Friday, 49-36, winning their tenth game of the season and extending their winning streak to eight. The Skins’ only loss was in early December against Kim, the number-one team in the 1A class.

The Redskins fell behind early and trailed 17-13 at the half, but a dominating defensive show by Sami Willhoite and Christina Koutnik shut down the Indians in the second half.  Willhoite had five steals and twenty deflections.  Koutnik had four steals and sixteen deflections. They also pulled in five and three defensive rebounds respectively.  Cara Campbell was just as aggressive defensively with four steals and twelve deflections.

The La Veta offense exploded with 17  third-quarter points to pull ahead for good.  Senior Shelby Morgan had 18 points.  Koutnik and Campbell each had eleven.

The victory gave the Redskins a three-game lead in their league.  With eight games remaining in the season, La Veta will have three league games in a row at home.

La Veta has been getting stronger as the season progressed and will make a bid to return to state.  With their dominating play, this could be the best Redskin team in recent years.
