Redskin girls add one to the wins in Aguilar

by David High

AGUILAR — The Redskin girls traveled the short distance south on I-25 last weekend to play the Aguilar Wildcats. La Veta is ranked seventh in all of class 1A, based on their record of 12-2, and ranked third in District 6 based on their 6-1 league record. The encounter, their only game of the week, went as expected, considering the home team played with just six players on the roster, while the Redskins emptied their 13 player team roster into the Fisher Peaks league match-up.

It was as close as it was going to get after the first eight minutes with the two teams just six points apart and the visiting Redskins in the lead 16-10. La Veta had an offensive explosion on one end of the court and a defense wall put up on the other in the next quarter. As the crowd looked for somewhere to get nachos and a soft drink, the score flashed the 42-16 Redskin domination over the tiring Wildcats.

La Veta continued their winning ways in the third period to make it 42-59.

The Wildcats, to their credit, took the fourth quarter 13-10, but the final was a mismatch with the red and white clad Redskins taking home the victory, 69-32.

Senior Jordan Porras led the Wildcats in the box score with nine points. Eleven La Veta players scored in the game that saw Kaylee Corsentino once again topping the list with 22 points. Rachelle Andreatta and B. J. Rinker followed with nine points each. Hope Jones, Cori Beth Topping, Mary Goins, Emalee Ortibez, Sonia Vallejos, M’Kinna Smith, and Lexi Borrego made it a true team effort, putting the ball through the net for scores of their own.

The Redskins now head into the toughest part of their schedule with five games remaining on the regular season. As Redskin coach Greg King commented last week, “We still have some very good games left on our schedule against teams like Sierra Grande, Kim, and Sangre.”

Next week will be another busy one with three home games against Sierra, Center, and Centennial scheduled for Thursday and Friday at 5 pm, and Saturday at 4 pm.
