Huerfano School District Re-1 had a regular board meeting on June 19, 2012.
The two school principals gave an update on recent staff hiring. The high school has secured a science teacher, Eva Benine. She was approved by the board pending background check. There was a discussion concerning her beginning pay level and the board felt she should start at the same level as when she left John Mall three years ago.
Athletic director George Purnel reported he’s been unable to secure a head football coach who also teaches. He is now advertising the head coach football position, only – no teaching required.
Athletic fees were discussed and a small increase was proposed. Fees apply to all students, regardless of financial need, and they must follow the ‘pay before you play’ rule. Details will be in the student handbook which will be presented to the board at next month’s school board meeting.
Peakview has all their staff hired. Gardner is still looking for a full-time preschool/elementary teacher, full-time middle school teacher and a part-time teacher on special assignment. Summer school will begin in the last week of July. This program will give students a needed academic boost for the upcoming school year.
The consideration of accounts payable and the financial statements was discussed. The consideration of the third quarterly report and the board meeting minutes of May 22, 2012 was also completed.
With much difficulty the board accepted, with regret, the resignations of Gery DiDomenico and Jacque Corsentino. The district will be advertising these positions. A committee was formed to review the technology department and to decide the responsibilities of this department in keeping up-to-date with changes in technology.
The second reading of board policy in regards to school colors was read and passed. The board clearly stated the school colors for Peakview School, and John Mall Junior/Senior High School shall be, and remain, purple and white. The colors for Gardner School shall be, and remain, green and white. The policy also outlined the use of logos, including JM-W-Panthers-Burg, which will remain on existing uniforms.
The colors are to be worn while the students are participating in pre-game warmup during the game and exiting the field. The exceptions to the use of school colors in uniforms include black briefs for the volleyball team, khaki pants for the golf team, and gray pants for the baseball team.
Other exceptions include National organizations who have their own colors, ie. National Honor Society. The discussion came about because of a provision in the old policy which allowed the seniors to wear black and silver at last year’s graduation.
The consideration of staff and student use of the Internet and electronics brought some thoughtful discussion. This was the first reading of the proposed policies, and it was agreed the staff’s policy needed to be tabled. The board felt all the district’s teaching staff needed to be made aware of the updated policy.
The board then discussed how, for instance, transportation maintenance department is in need of more staff but on a limited budget it doesn’t look like there will be relief soon. They also decided to table the recent hiring of a new staff member until new negotiations can be agreed upon.
