Re-1 picks Martinez for interim position

by Brian Orr

WALSENBURG- The Re-1 School Board decided on Wednesday, Mar. 19 to hire Principal Patricia Martinez as the interim Superintendent for the district.  Martinez, who is a 28-year Re-1 veteran, will fill the seat until July, as the School Board does a search for a permanent replacement.  The Board also decided to hire the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) to perform the search for superintendent for them.

Board President Jesse Jackson urged the Board to start thinking about long-term plans for the Washington school; including moving the school administration into it and selling their current building.  Jackson does not want the school to slip into disrepair, like the old St. Mary’s High School has.

The Board also voted to extend its contract with USA Partners for a final 90 days, to give them one last chance to come through with fund raising for the new track facility.  “It’s our only hope for funding,” said Jackson.
