RE-1 moving forward on security system, busing policy finalized

by Kathy Doolittle
WALSENBURG — The Huerfano School District Re-1 Board meeting was held February 28. Rocky Mountain Integrators, Inc. presented proposals for a state of the art security system for RE-1. Proposal amounts reflected the total cost of the labor, surveillance and intrusion equipment for each school location. It was explained that this type of system is the way of the future, easy to integrate, and of cutting edge technology. After a lengthy discussion it was agreed that the district should move forward on this proposal.
In other business the board passed policy on bus scheduling and routing. Parents/guardians of pre-school and kindergarten students must meet their children at the bus stop unless other arrangements have been made with the Transportation Director. If this does not happen with a student, they will be returned to the school with designated school personnel. Otherwise, students will be taken to the Walsenburg Police Department or the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Department. Parents would then be required to pick up their child at the school, or the law enforcement office if necessary.
The board moved on to consider additions to substitute teacher list for the 2011-2012 school year. Two candidates were nominated for the position of substitutes. Concerns were raised, though, by board members on how qualifications were being met when hiring substitutes. The board also considered and passed the substitute secretary list for the school year along with the extra duty spring coaches.
