RATON — Raton basketball marked the win column Saturday evening as both the boys and girls hosted ATC Saturday evening, the girls winning 61-30, the boys 78-46.

Girls’ coach Michelle Boone has been working to find the right combination of players for the team and may have found that as she substituted in and out with five players Saturday evening. The girls came off a 51-35 loss to district opponents Tierra Encantada on Tuesday. A sluggish season so far has pushed the girls to perform in district play to get things back on track. The district tourney is coming up late next month.

The girls had also struggled in the shooting game but came out and worked the ball inside to score 22 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third. The defense also did their job as they held ATC to just nine points in the second and third quarters. Raton also made it count at the free throw line as they went six of six while ATC managed a six of nine at the line.

ATC’s high point scorers were Ashley Zapata with 13 and one of four free throws and Felicity Sealy with 10 and three of four free throws. ATC was successful on six of nine free throws attempts.

Raton’s high point scorers were Halle Medina at 11 with one of one free throws; Andie Ortega with nine and two of two free throws; and Jadyn Walton with nine points and one of one free throws. All in all, they hit on six of six attempts.

The Raton boys continued the winning streak coming off a 70-40 win over Tierra Encantada, and posting a 78-46 win over ATC Saturday evening in Tiger Gym.

The boys started out strong taking a 22 to 12 lead and never looked back. Good rebounding and shooting continued through the second quarter giving Raton a 43 – 20 halftime lead. Coach Jose Archuleta took advantage of the lead and substituted in his bench giving the boys badly needed playing time.

ATC’s high point scorer was David Prada at 27 with eight of 14 free throws. As a team, ATC hit on nine of 19 free throw attempts.

Raton’s high point scorers were Ismael Tafoya with 15; Jose Archuleta with 14; and Dustin Segura with 11. The team sunk five of 10 free throw attempts.

The Tigers will host Desert Academy on Saturday.
