Preferred trail alignments on path for public review

by Edie Flanagin

HUERFANO-    The Huerfano County Parks and Trails Committee met last Thursday at the courthouse to hammer out the preferred alignments of the proposed trails in Huerfano county.  The proposed multipurpose trails criss-cross Huerfano County.  The envisioned  trails will link the four major population centers of the county with each other and with various state  (i.e., Front Range Trail) and regional trails (i.e., Rainbow  and Indian Creek trails).  The committee worked with the GIS maps provided by the US Parks Service to refine the routes proposed in the April 21 meeting at Lathrop State Park.

Criteria considered  for the preferred trail alignments were:  high availability of funding,  lowest costs to implement and most public support.   After two hours of intense work the committee turned in the preferred trail alignments to Joy Lujan of the USPS who will work closely with the GIS division to get the preferred alignments mapped and ready for public review in September.  The proposed trail alignment maps will be available for viewing from 11 am to 1 pm and from 4-6 pm at the Spanish Peaks Library meeting room in Walsenburg on September 20.
