Panthers open season in Fowler

by David Tesitor

FOWLER- The John Mall Panthers fielded eight grapplers in their first tournament of the year and finished in fourth place, missing out on third by a single point.

John Paul Vigil and Lorenzo Trujillo garnered a first-place ribbon, pinning and outscoring four opponents enroute to victory.  Vigil, wrestling at 119 pounds, won with an 8-3 decision over Archuletta of East High.   Lorenzo Trujillo pinned heavyweight Mike Adoph of Mountain Valley in 1:20.  Jacob Pino and Stuart Pino finished in second place while Jacob Tenorio captured third. Jacob Pino, wrestling at 145, was pinned by Gibson of Custer County.  At 189, Stuart Pino was pinned by Nick Montoya in a time of 2:43.  Barry Archuletta finished fourth, John Burch took fifth and newcomer, freshman James Sierra took sixth.

It is noteworthy that the host school, Fowler, had all fourteen slots filled.  The same applied to Custer County, and their team edged out the Panthers by a point and a half.  According to Coach Vialpando, "We only had six wrestlers who scored points for the team while the guys ahead of us had fourteen."
