Ortivez crushes all opponents

TRINIDAD– La Veta’s Ron Ortivez continued his sweep of all opponents as he captured the 160-pound championship title at the Trinidad Miner tournament last Saturday. Ortivez entered the competition with a school record of 19-1, 18 by pinfall.  Ortivez pinned all four opponents at the tourney, all in the first period.  His fastest pin came in the semifinals when he beat Charlie Jaeger of Dumas in 52 seconds.  While Ortivez was not ranked in the top four in last week’s ‘On the Mat’ polls, he will likely win regionals and advance to state.

Brother Adam (16-4) finished third when he pinned Gerald Lucero of Pueblo Central.  He lost his semifinal match to Taylor Edwards of Dumas.  Ortivez had already defeated Edwards twice this season.

Other Redskins who attended the meet but did not advance into the medal rounds were Michael Channel (112 pounds) who went two and out; Eric Griego (145) who went 1-2; Kaleb Bird (152) who had an opening round bye but lost his second bout to Josh Madrid of Trinidad; Logan Williams (171) who went 0-2 for the day.

According to Coach Ron Ortivez, “there is not a whole lot of wrestling we can teach these boys right now.  We are working on strength and conditioning.”  The Skins will travel to Center on Saturday for the Valley Classic, which should be their toughest test.  A good showing would put them in a strong position for the Regional Tournament in two weeks.
