Orlando Cup

by Guy Blasi

WALSENBURG- A sharp contrast in weather made golfing a challenge for the 32 players in this year’s Orlando Cup Spring Tournament held at the Walsenburg Golf Course.  On Saturday, course conditions were reminiscent of Scotland with cold, dark and windy weather. However, Sunday was warm, calm and near-perfect, more suited to the players’ liking.

Leon Medina won the jacket as this year’s overall winner with a net-total-minus-handicap, shooting a 137.  Second place went to Fred Eccher winning the tie-breaker over Jerry Sporcich, with both men shooting 138.

There were three flights in this year’s event, Medina, Eccher and Sporcich all came out of the Second Flight.  Top Scorers in the First Flight were Art Bobian (139), Pete Ross in second place (139) and Wayne Espinoza in third (140).

Because of the cold, windy weather on Saturday, the Senior Division played only nine holes on Sunday instead of the full 36.  Russell Young won the Senior Division with a net score of 32.  Second place was Norm Wolak (35) who won the tie-breaker with third place finisher Wally Padilla (35).

The next major event will be June at the annual Walsenburg Invitational to be held on Father’s Day weekend, June 20 and 21.  Many people who golfed this past weekend noted the course is in excellent condition and gave it very favorable reviews.
