Velma Margaret (Schmidt) Schecter, 88, passed away at her ranch home near Rye, CO on Tuesday, November 6th. She was born on February 2, 1924 on a ranch between Gardner and Westcliffe, CO, to her parents, Charles and Naomi (Baker) Schmidt. Raleigh Schmidt, brother of Velma, and Bruce Newcomb Schecter, husband of Velma preceded her in death, as well as her parents.
She is survived by her sons, John Schecter and wife Lynn of Rye, CO; David Schecter and his two sons, Travis Schecter and Jesse Schecter of California, and her daughter JoAnn Tomsic of Rye, CO, whose daughters are Erica Tomsic and husband Jon Conley of TX, and Jessica Schlueter, husband Shannon, and Velma’s 2 great-grandchildren, Harmon and Elley, of North Carolina. Also surviving is Velma’s brother, Warren Schmidt, his wife Wilma, of Florence, CO, and their children, Betty Schmid-Miller, Larry Schmidt, Marilyn Golden and Dwaine Schmidt with their respective families.
As a wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor, Velma had a profound positive effect on many.
To celebrate her life, a memorial service was held on Tuesday, November 13th at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Walsenburg, (Walsenburg, CO), with a luncheon following.
