Obituary- Lloyd G. Shackelford

Lloyd G. Shackelford 11-19-1919 ~ 4-30-2014 Lloyd G. Shackelford died peacefully April 30, 2014 in Walsenburg. Born November 19, 1919 in Grafton WV, Lloyd graduated from high school there in 1937. He migrated to Baltimore in 1941 where he worked for the C&P Telephone Company until his 1983 retirement. He served in the US Army Signal Corps during WWII. He married Mary Anne Farmer in 1948. In 1951, they built a modest home in Lutherville, MD where they raised four children.   From Lloyd’s retirement until Mary Anne’s 1996 death, they enjoyed a vibrant retirement, including a small winter getaway in Ft. Myers Beach, FL and a wide range of travel. After the death of his wife, Lloyd moved to the Oak Crest retirement community in Maryland, but continued wintering in Florida and traveling until his mobility lessened several years ago. In August 2013, he moved to the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Walsenburg. Lloyd spent quality time with all four children and son-in-law prior to his death, and all were present during his final

moments, albeit two by speaker phone. He is survived by children, Russell (Carol) Shackelford of Gulf Shores, AL , Loanne (Rod House) Shackelford of La Veta, CO , Larry Shackelford of Towson, MD, and Amy (Dave) Wilhite of Bandon, OR; by two grandsons, Jonathan and Jason Wilhite of Bandon OR; by numerous nieces and nephews, and by his cousin and lifelong friend, Lois Heflin of Grafton, WV who lives in the house where Lloyd was born 94 years ago.   Lloyd’s family is deeply grateful to the wonderful people at the Veterans Nursing Home and Sangre de Cristo Hospice who offered love and superb care for our father.  In keeping with Lloyd’s wishes, his body has been donated for research. When ashes are returned, he will be buried in Maryland with Mary Anne, the love of his life.
