Obituary- James Smalley

James D. Smalley

9/23/1936 ~ 5/4/2009

    James “Jim” Derald Smalley passed to be with the Lord on May 4, 2009 at the family home in Walsenburg, CO.  He was born September 23, 1936 to Alta (Briggs) and Earl Smalley in Alamosa.  He graduated from Alamosa High School and attended Adams State College.  He was a member of the (RCA) Rodeo Cowboys of America, Irish Wolfhound Club of America and many regional dog clubs. He made his living as a farmer in Gilman, Illinois for forty years and retired to Walsenburg with his trophy wife of fifty-two years, Constance “Connie” (Cultra).  He had an active life which, over the years, included: rodeos, showing, breeding and competing his beloved hounds, fishing hunting, traveling and enjoying his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his loving wife, Constance (Cultra) Smalley, Walsenburg; son, James D. Smalley, Jr., Walsenburg, CO; daughter and son-in-law, Eric and Margaret “Maggie” Wolfe, Alamosa, CO; brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Marcie Smalley, Burkburnett, TX; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Bob Thompson, Norwood, CO; grandchildren, Dustin, Ashley and James Smalley; Ben, Christopher, James and Jonathan Wolfe; great-granddaughter, Gabriel A. Smalley, and extended family and many friends who considered him family.

    Memorial service will be held at the Huerfano Community Bible Church, 603 Leon St., Walsenburg, CO at 2 pm, Saturday, May 9, 2009.  Memorial donations may be made to the IWCA (Irish Wolfhound Club of America) or IWF (Irish Wolfhound Foundation) or the Huerfano Community Bible Church, Walsenburg, CO.
