Edward E. Lyon PhD, 81, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012 at Morrison Woods Health Campus.
He was born on December 14, 1930 in Paxton, Illinois, the son of Ellsworth and Dorothy Lyon and graduated from Naperville High School in 1948. Edward graduated Illinois State University in 1958 and also in 1959 with a Masters degree in Education. He came to Muncie later that year and worked as an instructor at Ball State University in the field of Geography. He later received his Doctorate from Ohio State University in 1972, studying Science Education and continued to teach until 1995, retiring as the Department Chair of the Geography Department. He then moved to Walsenburg, Colorado where he built a log home on Mountain Lyon Ranch to enjoy retirement. Edward also served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 until 1955.
His memberships included, Dayspring Friends Church, the United Church of Walsenburg in Colorado, the Association of American Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education, the Indiana Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers and the Indiana Academy of Social Science.
Dr. Lyon is survived by his wife, Carol (Roth) Lyon; five children, Wesley Lyon (wife, Debbie), Teresa King, Thomas Lyon (wife, Darlene), Tamara Kacmarynski (husband, John) and Timothy Lyon; his grandchildren, Heather, Jon, Greg, Courtney, Colton and Stacey; his great-grandchildren, Britney and Ashlee; a brother, Jim Lyon (wife, Philippa); two sisters, Jane Larsh (husband, Jack) and Joanna Spence (husband, Allan); also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Terry King.
A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt. Pleasant Chapel with Military Rites to follow by The United States Air Force and the Veterans of Delaware County.
Family and friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
