Dolores R. “Lola” Medina (Atencio)


    Dolores R. “Lola” Medina (Atencio) passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2011.  She was born in Walsenburg, CO on April 11, 1930 to the late Miguel and Elvira Valdez Atencio and attended St. Mary’s High School.  She married to her beloved husband, Felix A. Medina, on October 25, 1947 and they lived together in Oakland, CA and San Leandro, CA before relocating to Newark, CA in 1963.

    Dolores was a direct descendant of the early pioneer Spanish settlers from the 16th and 17th centuries in the Northern New Mexico region.  She enjoyed her family both near and far, cooking, playing morning word puzzles in the newspaper and was an avid Oakland Raider fan.  She was very close to her brothers and sisters, Elmer Atencio (died at birth), Betty Millar, Manuel Atencio, Mike Atencio, Ben Atencio, Greg Savage, Andy Atencio, and Bernie Atencio all of whom preceded her in death.  Throughout her life she took many trips to Colorado to visit her family and the place of her birth.

    Dolores is survived by her husband of 63 years, Felix, as well as four children, John Medina Sr. of Newark, CA, Dolores and Ronald VanRyn of Newark, CA, Felix L. and Maureen Medina of Fremont, CA, and Donna Souza of Newark, CA; and daughter-in-law, Angie Medina of San Jose, CA.      She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Danell (Jeff) Manchee of Frisco, TX, John (Erica) Medina, Jr. of Stockton, CA, Daniel (Maryann) Souza of Fremont, CA, Christine (Juan) Patino of Castro Valley, CA, Steven (Yesenia) Medina of Stockton, CA, Felix Medina of Fremont, CA, Robert (Nicole) Souza of Fremont, CA, Elizabeth Medina of Fremont, CA, and Jennifer Souza of Newark, CA; as well as nine great-grand children and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

    Services will be held to honor Dolores’ life on Friday, January 14th at 7:00 pm at Holy Angels Funeral Center 1501 Harder Road, Hayward, CA.  A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January, 15th with burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery.
