New students coming to Re-2

by Jennifer Parker

LA VETA- Superintendent Dave Seaney informed the Board that nine new students will be added soon.  This will not really affect the class sizes since the new children range from elementary to middle school grades, and because enrollment is down overall from last year.

Elementary students were treated to a special concert on Tuesday by musicians from the Celtic Festival lineup.  The Ceilidh Peppers, a Celtic folk rock group from Scotland, will also entertain the high school students on Thurs. from 1:00 to 2:15 pm.

The Board has accepted another contract from Otero Junior College; granting dual credit courses for high school students.  Seaney commented that the teachers and students had very good luck with them last year.

The school’s football field/track and Garland Street projects have been a discussion for quite some time.  The Board will be interviewing two grant writers during October’s meeting so that hopefully these projects can get started soon.

The new athletics bus was scheduled to arrive in La Veta on Oct. 1, but the graphic designs are not finished.  It should definitely be worth the wait, for the bus is going to have a very spirited look.

Congratulations to Jake Ferrari and Franklin Geiser for qualifying for the state golf tournament to be held on Oct. 6 and 7 at the Elizabeth Golf Course in Elizabeth, Colorado.  They will also get to have a practice round on Oct. 5.  The entire golf team placed 6th out of 20th at the regionals.

A pay increase for substitutes will be discussed at a later time and a special budget meeting will be held on Sept. 30 to discuss this year’s monetary concerns.      Because of upcoming holidays, the next few meeting dates will be changed:  Oct. 14, Nov. 11, and Dec. 9 will be the dates of the regular Board meetings.
