Music Notes for January 28, 2010

By Mary-Ann Brandon

TRINIDAD– On Friday, February 5, local band The Sunnyside Ups will open for Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Randy McAllister at The Lucky Monkey in Trinidad.  This show promises to bring a dose of high energy music to the area.

The Sunnyside Ups are comprised of Huerfano county musicians Jug Colangelo (lead vocals, guitar) and Wendy McGehee (lead vocals, percussion, rhythm guitar). Rounding out the band are Doug “Dig” Glenn (drums, percussion) and Traemon McCabe (bass guitar, vocals).  They call themselves “a versatile dance band, with an original repertoire that spans Reggae, Blues, Soul, R&B and Rock”.  Their music is heavily guitar driven and has a strong root in the blues, though all their various influences certainly come through.  Members of the band have played with Edgar Winter, The Mighty Diamonds, The Meditations, Sister Carol, Merl Saunders, Leon Russell, Melvin Taylor, and others including local favorites Planet O.  Fans of Planet O will undoubtedly enjoy this band as well.

Headlining the show will be Texas native Randy McAllister.  His music is an eclectic mix of southern styles that would fall under the broad heading of Americana.  Soulful vocals reminiscent of Doyle Bramhall and Johnny Lang add a great deal to his overall sound.  If you are a fan of Bramhall’s group The Arc Angels, Delbert McClinton, or the Subdudes, I bet this would be right up your alley.  The show should bring an evening of good fun to help fight the cabin fever syndrome of the long winter season.  Bring your dancing shoes and shake off the doldrums.

Just a reminder to party responsibly.  If you go to a show and have too much to drink, don’t forget that a cab ride or hotel room is always less expensive than a DUI.  Drinking and driving kills, so does texting and driving, please be careful when you’re out on the road.  We need to keep our music fans safe and well.  Music feeds the soul and should never be the catalyst for tragedy.

    Peace as always… Mary-Ann
