Luna preview at the Springer Satellite: Still time to enroll

by Sherry Goodyear
SPRINGER — The Springer Satellite of Luna Community College held an open house preview for local Springer High School students on Monday, April 19, 2021.

For the first time in over a year, instructors gathered at the campus. Their purpose was to show area students all the college has to offer.  From trades to humanities, business to early childhood education, instructors from nearly all departments from the college’s main campus in Las Vegas, NM were there to talk about the many degrees students can attain at the community college.

Some of the demonstrations presented at the preview included the dental assisting instructors walking students through the process of making a mold of their own teeth that they were able to take home.

In trades, students were able to climb into a semi-truck representing the CDL program, view a revved-up motor from automotive repair, admire a remodeled car in collision repair, review the welding and cosmetology offerings, and inspect a mock crime scene created by the criminal justice department.

Academic departments like STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), business, and early childhood education handed out goodies as well as discussed the various certificates and degrees they offer through the college.
Humanities show-cased their revamped media arts certificate program set to start in fall 2021.  This one-year program is targeting those students interested in being trained for New Mexico’s thriving movie market.

During the tour, students were able to engage with instructors and ask questions about program requirements and job expectations upon graduation.  At the end of the preview which began at 9am and ended around noon, students clamored into the bus and made their way back to school, backpacks stuffed with Luna bling.

Meanwhile, Luna’s Las Vegas and Springer instructors and staff enjoyed lunch purchased from Subway and caught up after over a year of meetings held mostly via Zoom.
