WALSENBURG- The lodging tax revenues went up in its second year for Huerfano County. Carolyn Newman of the Tourism Board reported to the Huerfano County Commissioners that revenue in 2008 was up 20% over the $32,230 received in 2007. The money comes from the 2% tax on hotel and motel rooms. The overall money from the tax and grants came to $66,540. The Huerfano County Tourism Board has awarded $15,000 to 5 groups asking for dollars to promote tourism in the area. The Tourism Board is promoting and advertising events on a statewide level to bring more people to Huerfano County.
The Huerfano County Commissioners will take under advisement whether to put an initiative on the ballot in November to lift term limits on their jobs. Carolyn Newman brought up the topic at Wednesday’s meeting. She told the Commissioners that in her travels around the area she hears good comments on how progressive the Huerfano County Commissioners are. It was brought up that the other elected offices in the County have had term limits eliminated. The matter would have to be put before voters in the upcoming November elections.
County Clerk, Judy Benine commented that she favored the move because it takes time to learn and do the job. Commissioners have time to mull the matter before making a decision.
The Commissioners have rescheduled their comprehensive plan public meetings for May 15th and 16th.
The land use and comprehensive plan update proposals are in the public comment stage.
DOLA has awarded the County $115,000 more for the waste transfer station.
