RATON — A total of six contractors put in bids for the landfill cover project in Raton and all were fairly close in costs according to officials.

Jason Phillips, Raton Solid Waste Manager, said all six bids were within about $30,000 of each other. Interested contractors included A.J.A.C. Enterprises, Ace Mosimann, ERRG, Randy Sena Construction, CBKN Dirtworks and W.M. Serazio Construction.

While Ace J. Mosimann of Raton came in at $209,280, a New Mexico state statute that gives a 5% preference to a registered Resident Contractor was the difference that gave CBKN Dirtworks of Bernalillo, NM the lower bid at $213,410. There was a $4,130 difference in the bids but the 5% preference brought the CBKN Dirtworks bid down by $10,670.50 for bidding purposes.

Based on the preference, Raton City Commissioners awarded CBKN the contract to construct the cover over the landfill. The cover will consist of 18 inches of dirt over the landfill area.
