Lady Skins dominate the nets

by David Tesitor

MOSCA- The La Veta Redskins had not defeated the Sange de Cristo Thunderbirds during the regular season since they moved up to the 2A class two years ago.  Last Friday, the monkey came off their backs as the Lady Skins easily defeated the T-birds in three, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-14, to retain their lead in the league.  According to Coach Lessar, "The T-birds are a well-coached team with a lot of tradition, and they do a lot to control the momentum of the game."

In the first game, Jacey Day had a beautiful kill off Cara Campbell’s set to begin the game.  This sent a message that the Redskins came to play ball.  Christina Koutnik served the first four points of the game, then points 15–17.  Betsy Trenckmann served six points at the end of the first match to help put the Birds away.

The second match saw the Redskins dominate the service line as well as the net.  Sami Willhoite served eight points and Sam McCay served 8 points, including the game’s winning point as the defense dominated the net, keeping control in the hands of La Veta

In game three, Day served seven points including three aces and Cara Campbell had seven points which included the last four points of the game to give the Skins the victory and the match.  In the match, Day had eight kills, Betsy Trenckmann had 4, and Willhoite had 4.  Karley Corsentino was tough on defense as she added a kill on an overpass.

Coach Lessar said after the game, "Our serving was consistent and effective.  Our passing on serve receive was better and Sam McCay was terrific on defense.  The skills we worked on in practice last week were apparent during the match at SDC.  Still, we made some mistakes and didn’t communicate."

The Skins will have a busy week as they travel to Monte Vista Thursday night, with JV starting at 5 pm, then to Center on Friday, JV starting at 3:30 pm.

Crested Butte will be at La Veta on Saturday at 1:00 pm.  Please be aware of the change of game time for Saturday′s game only.
