Lady Redskins start off 2014 with a bang

LA VETA — The Lady Redskins are back in the swing of things after their Christmas break and are sitting nicely at 6-2 overall and 4-0 in league. The girls started off by traveling to Cotopaxi on Friday to play the Lady Pirates. Things went quite well for the Redskins and they took the lead in the first half by 10 points, 19-9 at half time. The second half turned a little shaky for the girls when they made some mental mistakes and let Cotopaxi sneak in. The Pirates scored an additional 13 points in the third, and 11 points in the fourth. But La Veta’s offense held strong, and the Lady Redskins took the win finishing up 39-34. Contributing to the Redskin victory were Rena Trujillo scoring 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals; Sofia Schneider with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 steals; Rebecca Uebler with 7 points, 10 rebounds, 1 steal; Gabby Lopez with 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals; and Tai Martinez with 2 points and 3 rebounds. Saturday’s first home game for the Lady Reds was against the Center Vikings. It was a battle from the start, but the Lady Redskins remained cool, calm, and collected and showed some great defense and the girls went into halftime with the lead 18-12. The second half was just as intense but Rebecca Uebler, and Gabby Lopez did a fantastic job of controlling the rebounds. The Lady Reds played tough and held pressure on the Viking offense the whole game, and that worked well as the Vikings got frustrated and struggled with their passes. La Veta took the win with 31-18. It was a great game for La Veta’s young freshmen Gabby Lopez who had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Rena Trujillo had 8 points, 4 rebounds; Sofia Schneider had 8 points, 3 rebounds; Rebecca Uebler had 5 points, 9 rebounds; and Tai Martinez also contributed with 2 points. Coach Berry was pleased with his team’s performance and said, “The game could have gone either way, but our girls played with a tremendous amount of heart and rarely got frazzled. It makes a coach’s job much easier when you have group of kids who can listen and execute, and that’s what we have with this group of girls.” The Lady Redskins will host Swallows Charter Academy on Saturday the 18th at 4:30. Swallows Academy is currently sitting 0-5 overall, and 0-0 in league. The game against Centennial, which was supposed to be played Friday the 17, was rescheduled to February 22.
