LA VETA — The La Veta Lady Redskins fought hard in a battle with the McClave Cardinals last Friday but suffered a tough loss of 44 to 38. It was the first of two games in the Regional Tournament, hosted at CSU Pueblo, that La Veta needed to win to go on to state competition.
It was a close match in the first quarter. When it ended, La Veta was only down by five points: 13 to 8. The second quarter proved to be a little tougher, and the Cardinals increased the gap to ten points. The score on the clock was now 28 to 18 in McClave’s favor.
The third quarter was evenly matched as each team scored nine points. The Lady Redskins were still down by ten points, ending the quarter 37 to 27. The Redskins actually outscored the Cardinals in the fourth quarter by eleven points to seven. It wasn’t quite enough to put La Veta over the top though and the Cardinals managed to soar away with the game 44 to 38.
Coach Lester Berry recapped the game, “We were right there in it. We matched up pretty good with McClave. They’re a real good shooting team. They hit quite a few open shots on us but we were in pretty good man defense in that second half and contested a lot of their shots.
“We started hitting the boards a lot better and put ourselves in a position to win the game. We shot 6 for 25 from the free throw line … . We limited our turnovers to just eleven and other than that it was an excellent ball game. … When we get to the free throw line we’ve gotta nail them and we didn’t do that.”
Top scorer of the game was Ashton Rinker with 16 points followed closely by Sofia Schneider with 14 points. Rena Trujillo was top rebounder with six rebounds. Schneider was hot on her tail with five.
“The girls got better and better as the season went on. They are anxious for summer and next season to start and that’s a good sign. I’m ready for summer and next season. I’m proud of the girls and all their effort,” said Berry.
