Lady Redskins hold on to perfect record after pulling down Crested Butte

by Bill Knowles

LA VETA- Returning to their home court after a three-game road trip, the La Veta Lady Redskins took out the Crested Butte Lady Titans in a best-three-out-of-five set.  La Veta seized the match in three straight, putting their season record at 7-0.

In the first game of the match, the Lady Redskins put up seven points before the Titans could answer.  At first the Lady Titans’ point gain came mostly through bad hits or passes by the Redskins.  But as the teams began getting into their game, the Lady Redskins began outplaying the Lady Titans by speeding up the pace of the game.

Sami Willhoite, Betsy Trenckmann and Jacey Day proved lethal at the net in both defense and offense.  Brianna Crump dominated the front court whenever she was sent in from the bench.  In the end the first game belonged to the Lady Redskins who outscored the Lady Titans 2-to-I ending with a 25-11 score.

The second game ended with La Veta controlling the floor and net and taking a 25-15 advantage over Crested Butte.  When game three got underway, Crested Butte played a harder, faster game and actually took the lead after La Veta had put the first point on the board.  They jumped out in front by four points before the Lady Redskins came back with their answer to tie the score at five all.

Tactically, La Veta worked a volley until they were able to draw Crested Butte off balance and open a hole in the Titans’ defense.  They  then took advantage of the weakness and scored a point, but each time the Lady Titans were able to answer with a point of their own.

By mid game the Lady Redskins were able to take the lead at 12-10 and hold on to it for the rest of the contest.  The Lady Titans were able to score only another four points before they found themselves slipping further behind to an unrelenting La Veta offense.

The LV offense opened a hole in Crested Butte’s defense at mid-court, driving their hits into it and finally driving the Lady Titans to a loss of 25-14.  This ended the match and game with the Lady Redskins taking best three out of five, 25-11, 25-15, 25-14.  La Veta outscored Crested Butte nearly two to one.

The Lady Redskins now boast a 7-0 record in regular season play with a 5-0 league record.  La Veta will travel to Del Norte and take on league rivals, the Lady Tigers on Fri. Oct. 8.
